My son just knocked my 40D off the counter and cracked the screen! I'm absolutely sick. Does anyone know how much that's going to cost to replace? Ugh, I just got my camera back two weeks ago after having the shutter replaced. :(

Ouch. Ouch.

No idea how much $$$ -- how much to replace your son? :-p

OUCH - poor you!

mine's had a cracked screen for about 3 months- its no big deal provided it didn't crack apart.

Does it still work?
03/23/2009 03:00:53 PM · #5
Does the LCD still work? If the crack is just in the glass cover, it should not be expensive to replace. The cover glass is meant to be a replaceable part.

No, the LCD doesn't work. :( It's all messed up. The screen is all white and yellow and black where it's cracked now when it's turned on.

And not to be the bearer of bad news, if
it broke the LCD, that impact is enough to
damage all kinds of things. Was a lens
mounted when it fell? Try removing the lens
and make sure the mount is ok. If that's
ok, you're probably limited to just the LCD.
Wow, you're having some rough luck. Need to
lock the ol camera up in a bag when not in
use. I've been there, I feel for you!

The lens looks OK and I tried shooting a few pictures and it seems to shoot OK, but I can't see how the photos look since the screen doesn't work.

Here's what it looks like. :(

I may have to sell my son to fix the camera. :) Anyone want a really cute, reasonably behaved 8 year old? Just don't let him touch your camera, lol.

Oh no!! I thought I just had my cats to worry about. Do you think 10 year old sons can be problems too?

That was my first thought too! Unfortunately we're in the middle of adopting a baby from Korea right now and it's sucking up every last cent of my money at the moment. This is the worst time for me to buy a new camera, although you have no idea how much the idea of that thrills me, lol!

The son or the camera?

Is it covered under your household contents insurance?
03/23/2009 03:52:13 PM · #16
Ut oh! You know what this will force you to do? Become a better photographer! Haha. I went throug a phase where I didn't use my lcd, just to work on getting things right the first time. Kind of shooting a film mindset on a digital camera. Makes you think about your composition more, as well as go back to some of the basics...metering etc.

Do I have to have a specfic rider for that? I have been meaning to call my insurance company to ask about that and stupidly I never have. Will they cover something like that if it's not specifically listed in my isurance policy? I've never dealt with an insurance issue like this before.

Maybe you're right. I'm so used to relying on my LCD screen that it almost doesn't even occur to me that its possible to talk a picture without it! Maybe I can look at it as a new adventure...

it'll almost 99% certainly not be covered unless its listed specifically on the policy.

It's a good point, I would have thought it would be covered without a rider--but whether it's worth it depends on your deductible. We have a $1000 deductible, so it wouldn't help much.

Crap. That's an expensive lesson. I've been meaning to check into that for ages and I just never have. Once I resolve this issue I will definitely be making a call to my insurance company to add it!
