Does anyone know if we've done a "50 mm only" challenge in the past?

I've hot a "legacy" Nikon 50 mm from my mother that is a beautiful lens. I'm enjoying being forced to compose by moving rather than zooming. Thought it might make for an interesting challenge to bring out the "old glass."

Thoughts?

Well, others have suggested aperture-specific challenges, including recently, though I don't know if anyone has specifically suggested 50mm.

I'd be all over it. My favorite lens is my Pentax-A 50mm f/1.7

I like probably 90% of the people on this site don't own a 50mm, I have an exquisite Minolta Rokkor f 1.2, 58mm but it is an effective 116mm when i use my digital. I like the concept but it would greatly limit who could participate.

Nothing like the big eye you get with one of these massive chunks of glass.

Bump and opinions ... are 50 mm's that uncommon?

It's not so much that they are "uncommon" — most of us, after all, have a zoom that covers the 50mm length, and I have a 50mm f/1.8 as well, but it's that "50mm" is a completely different lens on a full frame (where it's a "normal lens"), on an APS-C sensor (like mine, where it's about an 80mm) and on a point-n-shoot (where even if your camera tells you in the EXIF the focal length it's shooting at, 50mm is still the equivalent of a short telephoto), so what would be the point of the challenge?

I *HATED* the 50mm 1.8 I had bought 'cause it seems to always be mentioned as a "Must Have" for proper photographers, and promptly got rid of it.......

I'll take a pass......8>)

the idea of 50mm challenge is not such a bad idea..... a very traditional focal length.... on a small sensor I would have to use a 28mm or a 35mm lens, depending on camera to get relatively close to the visual effect of that focal length on a full frame.

No, not uncommon at all. I think they are quite popular.

Canon - approx 4000 50's (5 models) in the hands of DPCr's
Nikon - around 2000 (3 models).
Sony/Minolta - little over 100+ (3 models).
Pentax - little over 100+ (4 models).
Sigma - little over 100+ (11 models).

Main problem you'd run into with a specific focal length lens is that it pretty much excludes the P&S camera owners, so in the end it's not really going to fly. Would make for a fun side challenge (think it's been done before).
