OK I'm working on convincing my lovely wife to let me buy the new 5DII. Still some convincing to do :) but the next question for me is the choice of a lense to go with it. I have EF-S lenses that won't work and the 85 1.8 (and the 50 1.8) which are fine primes.

Now I'm considering either the 24-105 that comes very often in a kit or the 24-70 2.8.

The 24-105 has many advantages: less expensive (esp. in kit), 105 vs 70, IS, similar sharpness.

BUT the 24-70 opens at 2.8. And I intend to use this mostly for portrait photography. One of the reason I want to go FF, is to have the beautifull, shallow DOF that you can get with it as opposed to APS-C. So 2.8 does make a difference for me.

To you portrait photog out there that have used either or both with FF, what do you recommend?

thanks

Search the forums for those lenses and you'll find discussions on this topic many times over again. It basically boils down to speed vs. range and what you shoot. Landscape type people will say 24-105. Wedding/portrait people will tell you 24-70.

that's indeed what I'm trying to understand. I've read quite a few reviews and posts, but often there are all kind of advices, not clear what people are using the lense for, or if they're using APSC/FF cameras etc. and I haven't found discussions clearly angled towards portrait photography with FF.

I have the 24-105, and I love it, but I am often frustrated with the limits of 4.0

2.8 would be really nice sometimes, but then the reach of the 105 is nice too...

tough choices!

If the 24-70 had image stabilization, it would be a no brainer. I like having the freedom to move around for fleeting expressions and changing poses without a tripod. The speed of f/2.8 is obviously an advantage, but the 5D's great performance at high ISO settings tends to mitigate that difference. 24-105 offers more flexibility for composition, and you already have fast, portrait-length primes if you need the shallow DOF. It's no accident that Canon sells the 24-105 as a bundle with that camera!
