I shot this while I was looking for a something for the Rusted challenge. It wasn't rusty enough so I decided to not enter it. I have something totally different entered. Would love some advice on how to improve this (not necessarily for the rust factor, just in general). Thanks in advance.

I donno it looks good DOF and everything, it would of made a good off screen expectation reather than a rust one, maybe I'd like to see a bit more of those cable/chain. That's why it's a good offscreen expectation shot. I can't tell what I would of done different since it is croped so close and I have no ideea whatelse whas there so I could maybe compose it different.

The only thing I notice right off is that parts of one chain link and three rope strands fall just in front of the focal plane, while the rest of the subject (and the blurry background) look great. Because it's such a small amount, it appears unintentional and a bit distracting tp me.

I would try some judicious cloning or use of the local sharpening tool to try and reconstruct those areas, so that the whole subject appears in focus.

Composition and exposure seem fine to me; nice detail in the dark tones.

Now that I look at it again, I don't think the building in the background is necessary, making this a candidate for the all-powerful Square Crop! (see recent thread if you need context)

the bldg in the background (if a boat shed) contributes to the ambience IMHO. I thought that the chain needed more light, but then changed the settings on my screen and now it doesn't. The sky is a bit boring - I would add some dramatic clouds, impending storm (i.e. advanced editing) to create a tension in the picture

Thanks. Really glad I didn't enter it in the Rusted challenge now. :)

If that had been my picture straight out of the camera I'd prolly crop it on the left where the bottom meets the foreground boat(?) and just past the circle (to eliminate the building), and probably even turn it 90 degrees. I'd also have to try it in duotone and work on those texture or else concentrate on the red/green color combo. Ideally I would have included more chain by shooting it in portrait instead of landscape.

I guess I am odd man out, and I also don't know nearly as much as you here at the site, but personally, I like it having a couple of things off in the distant background. They anchor the image for me. Otherwise it would just be a plain geometric pattern for me. I also think it would have been a great rust entry; maybe I didn't have enough rust in mine!! Anyway, I really like this shot and would have scored it high.
