I can understand part of the reason for not allowing a photographer's comment before voting finishes, but the main reason I would like to be able to allow this is to explain why a picture was taken. I've had several comments as to why I actually took the photo I did... In my comment, I explained the reason in hopes that people wouldn't think I just shot the only thing available...

Comments?

It's an interesting idea to be able to have a comment visible on each photo, but the photo really needs to be able to stand on it's own without interpretation for the challenge. What do you think?

I can see this both ways.

The main reason we don't have the explanation from the photographer during voting is that the photo has to stand on it's own merits as much as possible. That means no narration, no special photoshopping..Just you, the camera and what meager 3 dimensional real world props/elements you can muster.

But..there has been many a time that I felt that the shear size of te entries and the casual surfing nature of the site would mean that a bit of a photographer comment might be helpful. Plus it seems like we don't talk about the photos much after the voting so photographer comments after the voting may never be seen.

Either way works for me.

I agree. The photo needs to stand on its own. I also ignore long photo titles when I''m voting. If the photographer has to explain the picture in the title, then the shot doesn''t tell the story.
