Hi Al,

I need to get a new mac - I am just wondering if the new macbook pros are good enough for proper photo editing etc - or is the desktop the better option. appreciate the bigger screen etc

cheers

Tony

If the screen is the big difference for you, but you need the portability, then you could always hook an external monitor up to the Macbook when needed. Desktops tend to deliver more bang for the buck though. I would prefer the 24" Imac if being portable was not an issue.

The MBP or definitely powerful enough, especially coupled with CS4 (beautiful really).

I guess it comes down to need of portability. If you need portability, the MBP is really nice. You always have the option to hook up to the external monitor (though through a proprietary cable) if need be.

If portability is no issue, the iMac will do wonderfully, the 24" is REAL nice.

I chose portability and haven't looked back. I can do my edits EVERYWHERE, which is a nice benefit over the small power loss IMO, I haven't regretted it at all.

I don't think so. I LOVE the IQ on the MBP and I've heard the glossy ain't as bad as everyone makes it out to be on the new MBPs. The details I see on the MBP monitor is nothing short of stunning (though I'm easy to please).

IMac, hands down. I own both, and there's no comparison between a MBP screen and an iMac monitor. Even with calibration, you'd have to use an external monitor to really judge color and tone on the laptop, and once you do that you've eliminated the portability benefit.

If you go with the laptop make sure you get the 7200rpm harddrive. I would also try and get it with the 512mb video card. A firewire 800 port if your using an external HD.
