Just wanted a few more comments as to what went wrong with this shot?

I know that tube is in the center and that's kind of weak, and there are no people in the shot, and that it is likely too dark... But overall I liked the mood of this shot with the smoke and the darkness and the Chrysler building there in the background, and just wanted to see why you guys thought it did so poorly?

I quite like it. The centering doesn't bother me in the least. It's probably a bit abstract for DPC is all.

Nice shot. I like the mood and smoke and darkness a lot. And I love the way the Chrysler building is illuminated. I get the feeling your really great picture would have been taken behind the tube (or off to the side slightly where the tube wouldn't be so obvious).

Thanks for the replies!

For what it's worth I think the tube is exactly where it belongs. It makes the whole thing feel a little off balance, a little edgy, which to me fits it as a rather dark and foreboding image. If I were to pick a thing that bugs me a little it's the way the streak of light on the right lines up perfectly with the barricade in the middle; this congruence grabs my eye and prevents me from seeing the whole composition. But I'd be lying if I said I thought that had anything to do with the score, and I'm stretching a bit to come up with a criticism. I like it.

It got an 8 from me, so can't help you much here. It is probably just not "eye-candy" enough....

It didn't come up for me in voting. I probably would have given it a 5, possibly a 6. For me, my eyes are torn between the pipe in the foreground and the Chrysler Blg, in the background. Both seem to be the subject so my eye is not drawn around in the image very well. I probably would have liked this better without the pipe.

Added: Put my own input in this thread before reading anyone else's. I see my take on the pipe is opposite some others. Just shows you what opinions are like. Everyone is different and what they like often conflicts.

Thanks guys again for your criticisms, they help put things into perspective for me. Just wanted some more feedback because I'm maybe trying to steer my shooting into a different style... :D

Heck, I think it's a fascinating image. It's not easily pigeonholed, though, and the voters mostly end up hammering on images that don't fit into definable slots.

I think it's really important to remember (mostly because it's so easy to forget) that there are a lot of really good images competing for top spot.

As for this shot, I really love the tones and the textures, the star refraction on the street lights, and the top of the Chrysler building, although it's a bit dark overall for my amateur taste. Like yospiff, the tube doesn't do it for me. Although it is in the foreground it, and the barricade are mostly unlit. So although it is "featured", it is likewise "blocking". Or maybe this is the type of shot best appreciated by more advanced photographers :-)

Is the steam coming out of the tube? Or is it fog or something else?

It's kinda New York City but not so much so. Dark, a bit disconcerting, but not sure if I like or dislike. Mostly I think I'm apathetic... And maybe that speaks to the score. :)

I didn't vote your shot, but if I had I probably would have given it a 3 or a 4 depending on mood.

There really just isn't anything interesting going on here. I've read the comments now and looked and looked to try to see what they see, and I just can't. I'm getting thwonked by a tube that there doesn't seem to be any purpose for. A giant light bloom competes with starbursts and light trails, and all of that is backed up by an uninteresting city street. Only after a few minutes of wandering does the eye fall on the Chrysler Building, which doesn't take up enough of the frame to really be much at all. The perspective isn't unique or unusual, the title doesn't give me any clues as to artistic intent, and the main subject (tube) just isn't capturing my interest in any significant way. The centered composition isn't balanced out by symmetry on either side. I'm left wondering why you took this shot to begin with. Not in a snarky way, just -- what about this place made you stop and take a picture of it?

Just my opinion…
My very first glance says it is way to cluttered, to see what the subject is. There may be a lot of interesting things going on. That would be at least more interesting/moody, if they were more isoloated and emphasized. You could have positioned your camera in a different location, or zoomed in. There probably is still at least 5 ways to “Slice-n-Dice” aka crop it to create a different scene and emphasis.

You think a lot to shoot a picture that makes others think a lot or quickly grab that once in a lifetime glimpse.

[Added] Sorry, I didn't vote in this challenge.
