Hi All,

I will be shooting a hair model for the fist time ever for a testing shoot.

I plan to have 4 lights:

1 huge softbox
1 FIll (2 stops lower than main box)
1 back light (2 stops higher than main box)
1 small soft box facing down on to models head (1 stop higher than main box)

That sound Ok or is it overkill?

cheers

Tony

I don't know anything about shooting hair, basically. I'm sorry nobody who does is weighing in. Maybe nobody knows anything about shooting hair, and you're our new, de facto expert...

In any event, good luck to you and experiment like crazy!

Found this old post at a Canon forum, circa 2006:

you do want to focus on head and shoulders because that is your main theme any thing else will distract the viewer from the the main subject the hairstyles.

you need a boom with a flash/softbox above the head of the models to highlight the hair . it must be placed behind and above the model. to check it turn off all other lights the light from this flash must not fall on the face of the model. another flash aimed from 45 degrees behind the model pointed at the hair will also give you great results. if you have a reflector use it to help fill on the opposite side of your main light. for your background use a color that will not conflict with hair's color white maybe

Must be a bad hair day here.
Your setup seems okay to me. I'm no expert, but I don't think it's overkill.
You should try it with or without the Top-Light.

If you have a wig and a foam wig-holder or a hairy dog, it would be easy to do some test shots. You can probably borrow/rent one from a wig store or some beauty salons (2nd choice)

You could even add a colored background light or to remove any possible shadows from the background.

Focus more on the image rather than your lighting setup. Don't approach it with a lighting recipe. What are you trying to say with your shot?

Watch how everything comes together - shoulder, neck, mouth, chin, eyes, hair, light, and so on. Get them to say something more than "here's a pretty face with some hair on top."
