I have a photo submitted right now that has a few comments about how they can't wait to see how the photo was done. I am very eager to share my information because I would want someone else to do the same. However, if I let out the "How I did it" on this particular photo it would probably hurt my scores on future contests if I decide to use the same technique. In short, the "secret" makes the photo what it is. I know this site is for learning and I am very thankful that I found it, but it also about contests, right? I would appreciate any opinions on whether or not I should revel it!

Thanks!

It is entirely up to you.

Why are you at DPC?

I always try to list the details of my challenge entries in the "Photographer's Comments" area. DPC is as much about learning as anything else.

My biggest "complaint" about DPC is the number of times I see "N/A" when I click on a picture. Or when people don't bother to fill in the exposure details (aperture, shutter speed, etc.)

P.S. If you choose not to explain your "secret" technique, I'm sure somebody else could probably look at your picture and explain how to achieve the same effect, either using the same method as you, or another similar method. =]

I fully share Eddy's view on this. Please enter the details and share your "secrets".

You don't get a better photographer by not doing it.

If you want to learn from others, you should offer them something in return.

I'll add my agreement with EddyG and willem. Certainly if you don't share the technique, others will give their interpretations as to how to achieve it. But also, remember that sharing the basic recipe doesn't "give away the farm". A great chef may give you his recipe, but can you re-create it? Maybe, maybe not...

Edit to correct abyssmal grammar!

Technique is but one element to producing a good photograph, whether award winning or not...composition is yet another very important factor in the success of a photo and if elements of color/tone, form, texture, perspective, etc are not there, then no amount of technique will be able to make a poor image good. That said, letting the "cat out of the bag" as to your technique may not hinder you, but actually aid you, because your revelation could also allow someone else to share a similar technique that you wouldn't have thought of otherwise. We all feed on each other...community and communication are the best aids in making us successful.

I am here to learn, so I am going to happily share the "secret". Once you know which photo I am talking about and how it was done you'll understand why I was hesitant in revealing it.

I think I know which photo was yours...and if I am correct, I am one of the ones dying to know how you did it! So please share your secret!

Todd: Which shot were you referring to when you posted this? I'm curious if you ever "revealed the secret"... was it your ribbon-winning Painting the Corners challenge shot where you showed the uncropped original?

Hope you took some setup shots to put in your tutorial. ;)
