I currently own a Manfrotto 785b. I really like this tripod design. It is compact and light, easy to use and opens up to a reasonable height. The only problem is that the ball head is a fairly light plastic design meant for a camcorder or a compact like my Powershot S5. For an SLR it provides only marginal support, and I feel this was part of what contributed to my dropping and breaking my 50mm 1.8 a couple of months back.

I'm starting to look around for a model with similar handling and portability, which will support an SLR better. Budget is $100 to $150. If I can retrofit a better head to the 785b somehow, that would be ideal, but it does not seem to be designed with replacing the head in mind. Anybody have some suggestions to help me narrow the options?

Hello yospiff,

I bought a new tripod around christmas time and love it. I got it from B&H. It was around 130.00. Here is the link to the page.Slik 700DX Pro The only thing is that it is heavy, 7#'s. It has soft fluid movements and very well made. I love it. Hope this helps.

For that price range, I would look at used tripods especially on Craigslist. I had about the same price range for mine, and I found a Manfrotto 3001PRO with a #3265 Manfrotto pistol grip ball head for $150. I am completely in love with this tripod. And if the grip ever gets annoying I have an Induro SA1 head that I like. I would highly recommend it, it's a decent ballhead for $50. Then you would just need the legs.

I would have to add the disclaimer though that I have never used the Slik, which might be a good alternative to Manfrotto.
