.....and I love the helpful and informative way my questions get answered here :)

Is there a way to bulk rename images without having to go through one by one? ( i.e. Amber and Nathan's Wedding 1, Amber and Nathan's wedding 2 etc

I have uploaded a whole pile of images from 5 different cards subsequently they are out of order. Is there away I can get them back into time taken order without moving them one by one?

I like using Adobe Bridge to do my bulk renaming. My needs are modest and Bridge is very fast.

My 2nd favorite is using ACDSee. You can pull anything out of the EXIF data and use it as part of the rename process. I used to use ACDSee all the time for renames, but recent versions have slowed down tremendously (when you're renaming 1000 images, it needs to be fast). So that's why I switched to using Bridge.

Can't you just sort them by date? Your cameras should have time stamped all the images, I don't use bridge but I would be very surprised if there wasn't a way to order by date in there somewhere.

If you are using windows, CTRL A to select all of them in the folder, right click the first one and select rename, type in the name, then click in the white area outside the photos

Thanks thats helpful too!

OK I must be really dense but I have two more questions. In Bridge under batch rename how do I actually do it? I cant see anywhere to type in a new name.
I managed to rearrange images so they are in order of when they were taken. But when I open that same folder in Windows it is still out of order, what do I need to do?

You can order by date in Windows too, at the top of the Window you're seeing the files in you will probably see a couple of headings like "Name", "Size", "Date" (sorry, I'm using a Mac just now, can't remember exactly what it looks like), just click on the "Date" heading and it will order them by date, click on it again to reverse the order.

You have to be viewing the files by details to see the headings I was talking about, sorry, I get so used to using that view I forgot you might be in another. One of the menus lets you view files with details, I can't remember which, one of the Windows users here might be able to help, I think it might be the View menu and then select Details.

Another way to do it would be, if have the folder containing all the images open, just right click on a white area (without actually selecting any of the images), go to "Arrange By" and select "Date", that should order them all by date.

You could also try A.F. 5 Rename your Files. Its a pretty simple but effective app. It has various counters and values you can use. Plus it allows you to preview the name entire series of names before you actually rename the file. It also allows you to move a single file up or down the list before it renames the file. Here is one of the sites you could try A.F. 5 Rename Your Files

Bulk Rename Utility

Works a treat... Allows you to rename and/or prefix/suffix/insert characters anywhere in the string...

If you have Windows, you can
1. Open the folder
2. Place them in the order you want (date, name, etc)
3. Left click and highlight them all (or use "Edit/select all)
4. Right click the 1st item, chose rename and type the name you want.
The 1st photo will become "Wedding photo", the 2nd will become "Wedding photo (1)", ETC
