Anyone have thoughts about the quality difference between the "Nikon 300mm f/4" and a "Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8" and a 1.4x teleconverter?
I guess i should specify that it's in the context of a full frame camera (D700)
Also, disregarding the small difference between the 300mm and the effective 280mm focal lengths

I have no direct experience with the Nikon lenses, but I know that the behavior of the Nikon 70-200/2.8 is very similar to the Canon 70-200/2.8. The 70-200/2.8 + 1.4x will need to be stopped down 1 stop for best sharpness, making your fastest usable aperture f/5.6.
I don't know how good the Nikon 300/4 is, but if it is anything like the Canon it will be very sharp even wide open. If this is the case, the 300/4 has a great advantage. It also has the disadvantage of being a prime, but if you frequently need 300mm, it probably is the right choice.

If your main interest is quality then go with the prime, if you need versatility then the zoom is better. I have had the Canon 70-200f2.8IS and a 2X converter and was not pleased with it, I have since aquired a 300mmF4IS and even with a 2X on that it is tack sharp.

I shoot on a FF camera too so the edges are important
