After the latest batch of updates, my computer no longer seems to think it has a sound output device. This is a laptop (Toshiba) and if I go to Sound in Control Panel, it says no device installed. If I go to the device manager, it shows the Realtek High Definition Audio is installed and functioning properly. However, there is indeed no sound, and the little speaker icon thingie has a red x on the system tray display. Any suggestions? I may try rolling back the update and seeing if that fixes it but haven't tried that yet.

Under device manager you could try "update driver"

or on Windows update, try custom update and see if there are any updated for the driver (unlikely but possible)

or you could try Toshiba's web site and see if there are any updated drivers for your laptop

failing that(!!) you could try booting up in safe mode and checking that there is only one set of drivers installed, I've had a similar problem years ago that there were two sets of drivers installed (but that didn't show when booting normally) and after deleting both drivers, rebooting to normal windows and reinstalling the driver it worked fine! To get it to boot into safe mode you need to press F8 (or maybe F5) just before the windows logo comes up when booting (it'll take several attempts to get it right!!)

In the fairly distant past, I've had sound problems with Toshiba laptops similar to what you describe except mine made a high pitched whine that I could hear sometimes, but I'm sure repelled dogs everywhere I went. Since the sound card is part of the motherboard, that's what I had to get replaced...twice. I'm just glad they were work machines.

I had a similar sound problem on one of my computers one time and it turned out the sound service was not turned on. The services can be found under administrative tools. You can have a look there and see if there are any audio related services that are not running. They should be set to either manual or automatic. Be careful not to turn off anything else by accident. It is possible to accidentally disable something essential in here.

Sounds like either the updates caused you to lose the driver or it muted your sound. I would make sure my sound didn't get muted before changing the driver. In case you don't know where to check that, go to Start- programs- accessories- entertainment- volume control. Make sure the mute box is unchecked. If it's not checked, I would check my sound drivers.
I've had that same problem after updating and it muted my speakers.

As stated before, this is most likely a driver problem. Could you post the model of your Toshiba laptop?

I suspect a duplicate driver issue - I disabled the driver, re-enabled it, and it appears as though that solved the problem.

As always, you guys are great!! Thanks for all the suggestions!

Are you running Vista? One of the service pak updates will cause that to happen and you have to go to the Windows website and find a driver to fix it.

Yep, Vista. I think the disable/enable bit fixed it for now. We'll see what happens the next time I restart!
