Ok, long story short, computer bit the dust, had to replace, got a new machine with Vista 64 premium installed (Not happy for many reasons). I did the deactivate thing luckily before the crash so went to install my CS3 on the new machine.

All seemed to go well but when I press the shortcut to Photoshop, the window comes up, but not the blue credit window in the center. It just stops - not responding. I have searched every way I can think of but none good enough I guess. Can't find anything. Done numerous removes and re-installs all to no avail.

Anyone have any suggestions or fixes?

I'm just posting to confirm that CS3 does work on my Vista x64. A long shot, but did you try right clicking the shortcut and running it as administrator?

Yes. Tried everything I have found/read and just cannot get it to work. Am real tired of installing/uninstalling...

I had to change to Vista 64, too (and hating it for the most part). Had problems with CS4, eventually wrote to Adobe. It took a couple of days to get an answer (the first response was along the lines of: are you sure you turned the computer on? Did you try installing the program?), but eventually they did come up with a solution.

hmmm... worked for me with CS3 & running CS4 now ...
( Vista x64 Home something ...)

I'm also running CS3 on Vista 64 Home Premium. No tricks or anything - just worked. I know that doesn't help much but at least you know it CAN work.

It was a fresh install on my machine (not an upgrade) and I'm running AMD if that makes any difference.

Do you have the most current service pack installed?
eta: I'm still using CS2 and it's working fine with Vista. My friend just got a new computer with Vista and he couldn't put CS2 on it. He was having the same problems you are describing and he was just too impatient and got CS4 and it installed no problem.
Here's a page with a bunch of troubleshooting help.CS4 & Vista Help
It looks like there are several suggestions there. Vista will seem like a big pain in the rear, but once you get everything set up, it works fine. (Except for the extremely slow start up!)
Oopps! Just re-read, so here's the trouble shoot page for CS3 troubleshooting.

Beetle: What was the solution?

icu1965: yes - all updates installed, all is current.

I will be returning this computer tomorrow, unless my wife wants it. Of the few things I actually do with my computer, this one will do only one of them - surf the web. It will not run any of the software I want/need/usually run and so far it has been a 12 hour pain in the ass. So much for research. This system was 'supposed to be the best' for what I needed.

I bought an HP d5000t machine a few months ago with Vista 64. It worked great out of the box. I haven't had any problems installing anything. I have CS4, lightroom, etc. I run both the 64 and 32 bit versions of CS4. I tend to run the 32 bit version though, since many of the plugins don't work in the 64 bit version. But the two versions are otherwise identical.

My laptop is a year + old, and it's running Vista 32. I have CS on that one. Just never bothered to upgrade it to CS4 yet.

Let me suggest that perhaps you received a machine with a lame video card, or lame video card drivers? I think if you get a machine with decent hardware, and enough memory, Vista is a dream. I like it better than XP and better than my Mac.

Get lots of memory--I got 6GB, a 512MB NVidia Geoforce 9500GS vide card, and even a ATSC tuner with a quad processor for about $1300 delivered. One of the least expensive desktop computers I've ever purchased. If you have time to order one mail order, check out the HPs; this was my first HP, and I am overall very impressed.

The hardware is not lame, same as yours for video - HP m9500y machine. As of this morning, the machine will be packed up in the boxes when I get home from work and returned. After 12 hours yesterday, the ONLY piece of software I have that works on it is this browser.

ALL Canon software that came with the 40D - installs fine, locks up when you try and run it - nothing past the splash screens.

PS CS3 - installs fine, PS opens, get the frame and background of the program, stops responding after that never even showing the blue window with the credits or completing the load. Bridge doesn't even do that, the icon spins a bit, but bridge never even loads.

Firefox - the browser itself actually runs, but so far no plug-ins or add ons work.

IE7 - only ever used IE to watch Netflix movies online. It will not do this either.

None of the lab software I need for work will even install on it. In fact, of the software that came pre-installed on it, so far only two applications actually worked. So, like I said, going back tonight and I guess I will be without a computer since there was not one I saw that did not have this crap operating system loaded.

All in all very disappointed especially since my other machine is completely dead and my other is a tablet PC.

Anyone want to buy a camera?

After reading dozens more forum posts in various places around the web, what I glean is this: if CS3 works on your Vista 64 machine you are extremely lucky. Either it works 'out of the box' or not at all and the ones I found where it is not at all, no solution was ever presented. Some say it is the particular version of CS3, some say it is left over files (don't see how this can be a problem if CS3 has never been installed before), some say it depends on if you run this or that in administrator mode or if UAC is on or off. But none has a solution.

Via my own experience I have tried every combination possible for this to work and it just will not. I am very depressed. New computer that nothing runs on and as stated above, no machine I saw had anything other than this Vista 64 installed.

What is worse, I contacted HP about getting my other computer repaired. Their response "yes, we can repair that however it will cost $xxx.xx dollars. This amount to repair the old one is MORE than I paid for the new one. They also stated that their repair would not be guaranteed since the machine model is no longer produced or supported (hence the massive cost to repair).

Sounds to me you got a lemon. My guess is you have some bad RAM. Fill the RAM up. it hits a certain section and things go screwy. I have not found a piece of software aside from Nikon Capture that I can't run on my 64-bit edition right out of the box and I have a cheap HP I bought on clearance from Best Buy last year. I've added more RAM, swapped out the video card and added another HD. It came with 32-bit Vista and I immediately upgraded it to the 64-bit edition.

I'm just sayin', I know you are frustrated - but clearly it's not the software. My suggestion is exchange the one you got and see if you have better luck. Clearly you bought that machine because it had the specs you wanted. There's still hope :)

RAM was first thing I checked. All tests and diags say the RAM is good. Did a manual count up with the RAM and it saw it all. 6 gigs total. Video card was next, same card as Neil says he has in his machine, ram on that tested good as well.

Again, from all the stuff I have read, and this morning a LOT of it was from the tech guys blog at Adobe, you are LUCKY if CS3 runs on your Vista 64 machine. Either it does or it doesn't and NO ONE has been able to supply a reason or a fix. The tech from Adobe strongest advice - upgrade to CS4. Problem with that is I don't have a working, validated install that will allow me to upgrade and I will be damned if I am going to spend 700 for a CS4 version when my CS3 is less than a year old.

You don't need a validated install to upgrade, just the license number. I upgraded my CS to CS4, as a clean install of CS4. I don't recall exactly, but I think it just asks for your previous version's serial number.

Hmm..when I went to do an upgrade it searched my computer (I think) for compatible programs and it found none and stated I was not eligible for an upgrade. Never gave me the option of providing a license number. Either way, I just got back from returing the computer and the monitor (oh, such a sweet monitor it was) and am using my wife's computer to now post.

Seems my recollection was right...see this thread..

Prof_fate was having problems with the upgrade accepting his serial number, but it confirms that it does ask.

It strikes me - that it has to be the machine. If other programs won't run - then it has to be more than just CS3. I hate it when a machine doesn't run right - there are so many variables. Other computer experts might have a better idea - but just to relate a story I had with a 6 month old machine.
Many programs kept locking up. I had it back to the shop a number of times until eventually one of the tech's suggested replacing the leads in side the computer box. They replaced them and I haven't had a problem since. Everything runs fine. I don't know all the technical reasons behind it all - but it worked for me. Don't know if this helps but thought I would mention it.
