Best of 2008 ribbons, what a race! Blue and red are actually tied if you round red to 2 decimal places, and yellow's only .004 behind that. I doubt there's ever been a closer finish among the three ribboners.

For all those who doubt their vote makes a difference, think again. In the 230 votes recorded by the red ribboner, that's a 1 point difference between blue and red.

Don't say that, you'll bring the trolls out in force!

More importantly, the top 3 were ALL taken with budget SLRs.

According to the results of the 'BEST of 2008' results, the Canon 350D with an aftermarket lens produced the best pic of the year.

So much for spending thousands on top level equipment!

Comparing my votes to the results there is a huge difference.
I will keep doing what I want (and I admit that my shot is not challenge orientated), but will not be voting any longer. It is pointless, my taste is not dpc taste anymore.

I wouldn't quite call the D200 a budget-level dSLR... It's more of a mid-tier one.

Great images on the first page!! I am personally not as crazy about the red this time as the lighthouse has been edited so much that it looks like a plastic toy (could be my monitor and/or my eyes of course) but the blue and the yellow are both fantastic. The yellow for me is definitely the best of the three while the blue clearly has the biggest 'eye candy wow factor'.

Congrats to all three for great shots well worthy of ribbons!

I'd like to see him go out in the rain with that though ;)

So the photos you do like will get one less good vote and the photos you don't like will get one less bad vote. That seems counterproductive to me.

Good point.

Two things......there's a saying here in the States.......Don't vote? Don't bitch!

Part of the point of the thread is that it was anybody's ribbon at the end....pretty much one vote could have swayed the end result, so if you DON'T vote, then there is that much less chance of there being what you would consider a worthy recipient of the better score.

Oh.....and it's ORIENTED!!! LOL!!!

Actually, there was barely any editing at all - no fancy tricks whatsoever. That's exactly what it looked like.

Walker Evans once said "People always ask me what camera I use. It's not the camera, it's - - - " and he tapped his temple with his index finger.

Ditto. From my 1969 Little Oxford Dictionary 'Orientate (transitive verb) ...take one's bearings etc..'.

In British English orient is not commonly used as a verb, but as a noun to refer to the East.

Wow - that's an amazing dynamic range to be straight out of the camera! So it was my eyes after all - lol.
The forces from the nature (ice and waves) in this shot are huge in comparison to the lighthouse and made it look so small and toy like in the surroundings so I guess that and the dynamic range in addition to the vivid colors totally fooled me.

I think this is a compelling reason to keep voting, actually. If only people who agreed voted it would defeat the whole point of voting.
