Can anyone tell me what this thing is used for?

I'm referring to the glass board to the right of Obama.

Does it show his speech?

I've noticed them around people when they talk on tv, and I recall seeing it on an episode on 24 (I think) where the speech was running off the thing electronically.

Someone here says it's polarized from the front, so you wont see anything in youre facing it. But other say it's not for speeching at all...

Any insights? If this board is for reflective light or something - then it's the wrong picture, but if anyone recalls what I'm talking about... much appreciated!

Yeah - that's exactly what it is. The words are projected onto the glass, kind of like what fighter pilots get with a HUD in the cockpit (heads-up display).

You can only see the words from a certain angle (i.e. so the audience can't see it from their vantage point).

Ah great!

Now the other debate - my boss says Obama doesn't read from the thing at all... like his speech yesterday.

Is this true?

I haven't watched enough of Obama's speeches to notice, but I did hear them saying on CNN that he works with his speech writers to write his own speeches, so possibly most of what he wants to say is in his head or he can remember what he wrote, so he doesn't need to look at the prompter as much.
When speakers are really good at delivering speeches the audience shouldn't notice them glancing at their notes anyway. But that's another reason they use those glass prompter boards - it looks as though the speaker is looking through it, not at it.

Unfortunately, George Bush never seemed to get the hang of it. It always looked like he was reading his speech, rather than talking it. And then you have to wonder how he still managed to make all those incredible gaffes.
