Because the Chief Justice messed up giving the oath....

John Paul Stevens used a book to make sure he got it correct for the VP, but Chief Justice Roberts tried to do it from memory...

It's interesting to see people who are so used to the spotlight actually get a bit ruffled. Sorta reminds you they are just people after all. :)

He sure did (mess it up).
For the superstitious, it must be an omen.

I think they both got flustered when the chief justice had to repeat himself after Obama couldn't remember what to repeat. Needless to say I think they were both a little nervous. :)

Actually they take two different oaths. Here is from wikipedia...

The oath of office is traditionally administered on the steps of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. The vice president-elect takes the oath of office at the same ceremony as the president-elect, a tradition which began in 1937; before then, the vice presidential oath was administered in the Senate. The Vice-President-elect takes the oath first:

“ I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same: that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion, and I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. ”

This is followed by four ruffles and flourishes and "Hail, Columbia."

At noon, the president-elect becomes president. At about that time, the president-elect takes the oath of office, traditionally administered by the Chief Justice of the United States, using the form mandated in Article II, Section 1 of the United States Constitution:

“ I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Ken, I'm sure that it's a Democrat conspiracy of the darkest, most sinister sort...

Everything seems the same as it did one hour ago. Where's the hope? Where's the change?

yeah..the only thing they did wrong was misplace the word faithfully.

They did fine. And the oath the VP takes is pretty darn similiar (except for that Vice President part) to what we mere peons take, which is kinda cool. :-)

hawk...you have to come out of the cave first to see the change (southpark reference lol).

And there was already some change. They said that the new president never saw the former president off in the helicopter (change!). The route of the helicopter flying the former president off also CHANGED the normal course and flew over the North Lawn before heading to Edwards...

haha...the change has begun!!!!

Perhaps you missed the part within that hour where America gained a new leader... a rather substantial change for this country and the world.

Ignore the oath, WTF was that National Anthem? I found it all rather embarrassing to be honest. It was sung to the tune of "God save the QUeen", the British National Anthem..

It's supposed to be. They share the same melody.

I think Simms is referring to "My Country Tis of Thee" which is indeed sung to the tune of "God Save the Queen". Or have I mis-remembered? Happens a lot these days... (Just discovered I'm older than my new Commander in Chief...)

I awlays thought it was the other one, you know "oh say can you see" etc. I thought that was your national anthem.

The "oh say can you see" is the National Anthem, but I thought it was My Country Tis of Thee that was sung to the tune of God Save the Queen. Aretha did the latter; the Navy singers did the Anthem.

But nobody can actually sing that song, so we go with America the Beautiful" or "My Country 'tis of Thee" instead.

It has been one of the main reasons the USA has considered on several occasions to invade Canada. They have a much better anthem - and one that can be sung.

That is our national anthem which was sang after the Presidents speech. My Country Tis of Thee was sang by Aretha Franklin at the beginning, Which one were you refering to?

fwiw, The Anthem sounded pretty routine to me.
