The company, which filed for bankruptcy protection in November, said Friday that it would liquidate its stores and other assets.

First I want to tell all there employees, they have around 30000, I'm sorry that your jobs will be lost. I would wish any hardship on anyone.

Now with that said you maybe able to find some good deals. If you a CC in your area I would advise anyone that is looking for a particular electronic item to visit there stores only a weekly basis if not more than once a week. You will see the prices of demo items drop sharply.

Here's the article.

Guess I will have to frequent the one that is only about 5 min away from me. I could always use some more CF cards.

Here is a list of the closing stores.

This is sad. Very sad. I like their stores.. at least for trying out new gadgets. And sometimes they give good deals too.

Well .... all the Orlando stores are on there.

Personally I don't like their stores, but all the same I feel bad for the people who are losing their jobs.

And here is a list of the FAQs about the liquidation process.

I just got an email from square trade warranty co. that says that you can get a pro-rated refund for part of a Circuit City warranty, and buy a square trade warranty for much less than the CC warranty if you bought an item at CC less than 90 days ago.

edit spelling.

Just checked on that with their "Source Stores". So far, they have not been affected but there is a 70% sale and they had shut down a bunch of locations in Canada about a couple of years ago. I'd say we'll hear about Canada in the next two weeks. All this crap really sucks!!

There are some decent deals out there still in the stores. Most of the boxed dslrs are gone even at only 30% off, but great deals can be had on demos. I just got the Canon 100mm 2.8 macro for 50% off list. Glass is perfect and it works like new and has warranty card and papers. Missing is box and front cap, but I'm not complaining.

My brother in law was at the store calling me with the prices the other day. I was on Amazon comparing. For the most part even with 30%+ off Amazon was cheaper. They raise the prices to the suggested retail and then discount. So a TV that sells for $999 but has a list price of $1500 is put up for sale at $1500 and then discounted 30% for a savings of...-$50.

So we decided to look at things like video games and stuff that was sold at full list all of the time. Halo 3, Circuit City price...$39.99 (post discount) Amazon $36.99. I am just not sold that there is any real value until the store is about empty and when that happens all that is left is broken junk.

Evidently YMMV. I paid $227 for the display model of a lens that's selling on Amazon for $490, except that I didn't get a box or lenscap.

I do agree that I was shocked to see a 50D, about 5 40Ds, and a 5D (original) go for 30% off list in the last week.

That was my thought as I wandered through our local store this afternoon. I definitely wasn't impressed with the "25-50%" alleged discounts.

They usually sell stuff to a mass wholesaler when the discounts get good. There is so little mark up in electronics that a company will buy them out once the discount hits a particular price point. Often these going out of business sales yield them high profit margins.

Your friend might have got a good deal, but he did get a product that would be considered open box which is essentially a refurb by law. Plus now CC does not have to ever take it back or warranty it.

Which leads me to my next point. All the people that have purchase those overly expensive protection plans are probably just out their money. If you paid $400 for a plan to cover your TV for three years and it breaks I bet you are out of luck.

yea--finally found a good deal on denon a/v receiver display unit, but the first couple times I went in I just took notes and then came back and checked items online to compare. Deals are "so so" in most cases, but the inventory is really dwindling.

At the one near me, it seems like they still have a LOT of big screen tvs, so folks really are waiting for those prices to come down some more. dslr stuff was gone, point/shoots were down to display models only.

So you're telling me that I should ignore the postcard I received from CC to signup for a service contract for the computer I bought last May? I received it just last week... seriously.
02/14/2009 11:47:12 PM · #16
I don't think they have to nor will honor any of those contracts. I used to work there 10 years ago and they almost never honored them at that time. I would think that all bets are off now.

My deal at CC. I found a canon 100mm2.8 macro for $227 works great!!

My deal from Circuit City, A friend of mine knows a guy who worked at CC until they announced the closing. He was an inventory manager, Part of his job the last couple of weeks he was there was to return shipments to vendors, Stuff that was on constant order like PS3 xbox360 Nintendo games, music cds blank media etc. Anything that basically shipped to the store by default every 2 weeks or whatever, Anyway he was supposed to send back a shipment of batteries for the wireless xbox controller, instead he purchased them at way below cost, he sold us 8 batteries for $40 The batts were selling for 14 dollars so we got a pretty good deal.

Grabbed a few items at CC today...

- A Garmin Nuvi 265WT for $209 (online pricing averages $270); last one in the store
- A "TV style" remote for PS3 for $11, so we don't have to fumble with the game controllers watching movies
- An APC battery backup unit, 1300 VA for $96 (best online price is $167)

Lots of other stuff was still really not a great a deal. Was in the market for a wireless N router, but I can do just as well on line as at CC *with* the discount :-P

That's okay, you can pretend you don't know how to use it or, better yet, that it's not working properly ;)

Was there tonite - got a Wacom Intuos 3 6x8 tablet for $197 (retail $329, best online price around $273). Saw a 40D w/ 28-135 for $909.

I visited the store in the next city over from me - it was decimated even worse than my local one. I did find it interesting to see what cameras were left under the display. A lot of Olympic and Panasonic P&S models, and quite a few Olympic and Sony DSLRs. Oh, and they had an old Canon 20D display model that they were asking $900 for - they must be insane.

They just did a story about this on our local news. They said the company that handles all of Circuit City's extended warranty contracts "Assurant" is in good standing and they plan to make good on all extended warranty contracts purchased at Circuit City. So hopefully people will not be screwed out of their extended warranty.
