dog and christmas tree help??? - DPChallenge Forums

any hints or tips on how to properly expose a dog and a lighted christmas tree????
I'm having a little trouble :-)

I'm using a 30D and a 430ex speedlite flash.

What shutter speed are you trying to use? Normally if you slow the shutter down, say 1/20, then let the flash ettl the pic it should come OK. By slowing the shutter down it will allow the lights of the tree to come through, then the flash will take care of the dog.

Try slowing the shutter down then adjust from there.

1/10 is working quite well, but I was finding the flash was lighting up the tree too much as well as the dog.
I'm trying different flash powers now.

Good, that was my going to be my next suggestion was to reduce the flash power if it was still to 'bright' for you.

eta: ...and post a pic when you're through if it's not going in a challenge.

What color is the dog?

I think the dog is brown and white.
I say "think" because I'm doing the photoshoot tomorrow for some lady I've never met before.
So at the moment I'm practising holding my cat in front of my own tree.
I have to hold the cat because our tree hangs upside down from the ceiling :-)
I'll be sure to post something tomorrow if the shoot goes well.

you could try using the flash, but dialing it down if you haven't done that.

Wha?? At least post a pic of you dangling the cat in front of that unorthodox scene! :)

I asked about the color of the dog because I have 2 dogs - one very dark brown and one white - they are both extremely hard to expose for. Not that I have any tips for ya, but I thought it was an important fact for others to be able to advise. Good luck!

aperture affects flash exposure ( animal )- shutter speed affects ambient light exposure ( tree ).

can you use the flash off camera ?

I'm not sure what effect you are trying to get but

this was taken today with the tree in the background and lights on. My settings were F2.2 ISO 400 SS 1/125. Flash was set on 1/16th power and bounced into the ceiling using a Demb Flip it.
