I am in procrastination mode today, so I decided to start a thread amalgamating challenge suggestions from the past month or so. I may have missed a few, (if so, I apologize to the suggester) but thought it would be a good start to a thread. Maybe folks can comment on their favs or add a few more:

The natural world - capture something in its most natural environment.
Affection - capture the feeling of affection in your photograph.
Dusk and Dawn - capture your best dusk or dawn shot.
Wings – Take your best shot of wings – could be bird wings, angel wings, army wings -
Big things - we've done a micro/macro challenge... now let's see you capture a subject that's huge in size.
Following Eyes – Think of all those great paintings an dportraits where the “eyes” literally follow you no matter which direction you look at the image.

Sayings and Metaphors – You can make one up or use a commonly known one: "He's as simple as a one-piece jigsaw puzzle” or “wet behind the ears” or “Old friends and old wine are best.” “Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you cry alone.” You made your bed, now you must lie in it.
Juxtaposed Shapes - Contrasting shapes can be eye-catching; similar shapes gives a more relaxed feeling. Take a photograph that effectively combines two or more shapes in a balanced image.
Natural lighting - No studio lighting here! Shoot something using only natural lighting.
Implied Lines - The human eye is very good at seeing lines, whether they really exist or not. Take a photograph that uses implied lines (e.g., the "line" made by a row of trees) as a compositional element.
Backlit Subject - Take a picture of a backlit subject. The main light source in your image should be behind the subject. The catch: the subject must not be a silhouette. (This is Gordon's suggestion with an added catch.)
Framing - Create an image where the foreground subject frames the rest of the image.
Fauna - We've had flora, how about fauna.
Viewpoint - Take an image from an unusual viewpoint to improve composition and add interest.
Fences - Just like the wheels challenge -take your best shot of fences or a fence.
Panorama - Enter a panoramic image into this challenge. Take into account the special compositional needs of a good panorama.
Serenety Now – Take something that reflects serenety, calmness or peacefulness.
Greeting Card – Member challenge maybe – allow some PhotoShop work – to add text.
The beginning... The End – New life, new buds growing from the earth, the elderly,
Splash of color: In a nearly monotone image, your eye will be drawn to a splash of color, especially red. Without using desaturation in postprocessing, create this eye drawing effect in your photograph.
Dual Center of Interest - A common "rule" of composition is that an image should have a single center of interest. But rules are made to be broken! Take a photograph that has two points that could be considered "centers of interest" yet still maintains a cohesive feeling.
Candid/Street Photography – Take an image that shows a street scene or candid image.
Glamour – Show your best intepretation of glamour
On the Edge : Take a photo where the composition is enhanced by your subject being located near one of the edges/corners of the frame; a variation on "negative space" in that I don't think the rest of the frame has to be "empty."
Compressed Perspective - Take a photo where objects appear to be closer together than they really are.
Flipped-Out - Take a photo in which the final version has been rotated 180 degrees from the original capture. No fair holding your camera upside down while you shoot!
Upon Further Reflection... Take a photo in which your subject is primarily depicted in a reflective surface.
Balance - Take a shot that shows balance in your composition.
Photo Diary - Take a shot that represents a day in your life. (Candidate for a no editing challenge.)
Low Tech - Shoot something NON-ELECTRONIC that would be considered old technology.
Late night - Take a photograph late-night, and be creative.
Hope - Photograph something that represents hope.
Deep depth of field - We've had a shallow DOF challenge. Let's see shots with deep depth of field!
Comfort - It doesn't have to be fluffy. Shoot something that comforts you.
Weekend - What do you do at the weekend? Show us!
Decisions - We all have to make them. Creatively shoot a decision.
Newspaper or Photojournalism - Take a journalistic shot that would appear in a newspaper.
Extraordinary - We've had a Mundane challenge. Now shoot something extraordinary!
Tribute - Study the work of a well-known photographer and take an image inspired by his/ her work. The image should not be a copy but should seek to convey your chosen photographer's style, subject matter and/ or techniques.
Yellow,Red,Green, etc. – a colour challenge
Peace - Take an image that conveys harmonious relations, reconciliation, inner contentment or serenity.
Shutter Speed - Create an image where your choice of shutter speed leads to the main impact. Choose fast shutter speeds to freeze motion or slow ones to capture motion blur.
Moods - Take a picture that captures an emotion.
Music – Take an image that represents music- or the impact of music (including dancing, movement, etc.)
Wealth or Poverty – Take an image that represents wealth or poverty
Horizon line – Take an image where the horizon line forms the main subject or most interesting part of your composition.
Vanishing Point
Abstract. Abstracts are about lines and shapes. If it is recognizable as an object - it is not an abstract.
Triptych. A triptych is a three panel art work. Upload a picture consisting of three panels to tell a story or illustrate an object or concept. (Special rules).
Impressionistic. Learn about some of the techniques of impressionism, and generalize them to a photograph while staying within the DPC rules.
humans that look or act like their pets Some of the funniest pictures show humans and how they look and act like their pets. Ok, it won't be museum art, but we could all use a good laugh.
Multiple Light Sources – Creatively compose an image with multiple light sources.

Black and White - Reduce the world to a palette of grays and focus on light, shade, line, texture and form.
Monochromatic – We’ve seen some stunning black and white photos, but how about sepia-toned photos or any photo that is multiple shades of one colour (like blue).
Sepia – Same as above
rust - take a picture of some sort of rusty/corroded metal in a creative way.
Cultural Events or Culture – Take a photo that represents culture – or a cultural interpretation of something, a cultural event is one idea.
Land Marks
Late night - Take a photograph late-night, and be creative operation.Shiny metallic seperate photographs in the same composition. This technique is referred to as a diptych or a triptych, respectively.
Something New - Shoot something you have never entered before taken in a place you have never taken pictures before.
The Classics - potraits, photojournalism, landscapes, nudes,b&w [Ed. Not sure if this was separate or together?]
Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder - A photo of something usually thought ugly, but using your incredible photographical ability, makes it into a work of art.
Oxymoron - Or any other English terms that have been earlier suggested. Take photos of something that just doesn't work (inflatable dartboard, solar powered flashlight, etc.)
Flower Challenge or “In the Garden” - Although they are in every round, some cower from taking flowers for the feel they will be voted down for unoriginality. It's about time for a flower challenge...Flora Re-visted pehaps...no cat challeneges...ever.
Rule of Thirds - A compositionally pleasing challenge!
Perspective: capture an image of something that typically presents a perspective problem, e.g., pictures of buildings and correctly apply perspective adjustments to present an undistorted image.
Form - Make an image that emphasizes the three-dimensional aspects of the subject.
Bokeh - Loosely defined, bokeh is the quality of the out-of-focus background of a photo. It isn't very interesting by itself, but take a photograph whose subject is enhanced by the bokeh of the background.
From Below We've already done From the Ground Up and From Above, either of which would be good to do again. A variation could be From below. Take a photo in which you camera is pointed up at the time of exposure.
Posterize - Shoot or post-process your photo to achieve a posterized look consisting of only a few distinct tonal values.
Square. Compose a picture that is balanced within a square crop.
Old Style Hollywood Portrait Lighting (ala George Hurrell)
Religious architecture
- This is just an idea, but maybe we could have a challenge based on the decades.
Shoot subject matter for a given decade: the 20's, the 50's, the 70's, etc.
Your home - could be indoors or outdoors - shoot an image that best represents the space you occupy when you're at home. (simliar to where you live, only this one is for your actual house/home/backyard/front yard/neighborhood]
Best Friends. Everyone knows or is part of an inseperable friendship. You know the ones that are always together, think alike and sometimes even finish each others sentences. Your challenge this week is to make that special relationship come through in your photo.
Brand Names: I know we have done Book Titles and Song Titles, but has there ever been a Band Name challenge?
Trees – No matter where you live, you’re bound to find a tree.
Pride Show why your homeland makes you proud. Produce a photo that shows the pride and joy of your homeland.
Morning Rituals - I think we should do a challenge where we depict our mornings in the best possible way. I was originally going to suggest "Morning Beverage" but then thought that it should be more open ended.
Cheap Thrills - In every community there's at least one store that contains at least one aisle of "cheap thrills" - bright bottles of bubble solution with wands to help form the bubbles, squirt guns or water pistols of every shape and size, little plastic contraptions that launch pastel discs into the air.
Fragility – We’ve done strength. Now let’s try fragility.
Wild – Reflect a sense of the wild in your image – wildlife would count here.
Perpetual
Junctional
Weight – show something that represents weight
Subconscious
Misinterpreted – Show something that can easily be misunderstood
Missing – your image should show there is something missing.
Innocence – Take your best capture of innocence.
Outdoor scenes – landscapes, etc.
time – Your image should show a progression of time.
solitude – take your best shot at solitude
Pain – take your best shot at pain
Falling
Distance
Wood
Religion
Justice

Missed one I posted Apr 7 that I am itching for:

Tutorial Challenge Find a digital photo tutorial on this site or another and create a photo where the result is enhanced by the tutorial.

I like that one. Sorry I missed it.

One more suggestion:

On the move: Take an image of something that is on the move - walking, running, flying, wheeling away... Creatively capture your subject while it is in motion.
04/27/2004 12:55:30 PM · #7
Woops... meant to add another one (in a similar theme as on the move):

Something Still: Creatively capture an image where your subject is still (or appears still) but the background is motion blurred.

Candid/Street and Affection.

(Compositional) Balance, IMO, is not a good choice, since any good photo will be balanced.

Mailboxes

Everybody has one. And some are funny. I've seen them in the shape of fish, little houses, etc. Sometimes the stands they sit on are strange. Could include Government Postal Boxes on street corners.

Feeling of Security. It means different things to different people. Lots of ways to picture it. Hopefully not a lot of flags and churches.

Some more in the last week from forum posts: - feel free to add more or vote on favs!
My pics (besides the ones I mentioned earlier)
- threes, humour, post cards, birds in flight

Threes: Take an image that captures something in threes.
- you could do this with any number.
Marketable image Think stock photography - what could be the most marketable picture?
pop cultureThink andy warhol. So how about it? An open challenge preferably (more people, more culture, etc.) of Pop Culture shots...Just a suggestion!
An appeal to the senses Sight, smell, taste... think of a sense and take your best shot.
historyTake a shot which expresses an element of history, or depicts a bygone age.
humour Take a shot that makes people laugh.
Post Card Revisited Take your best post card image.
Birds in flight Birds are common to every locatio in the world. Take your best shot of one in flight.
Before and after A challenge where the goal is editing BUT, within the limits of the new advanced rules and keeping in mind the photographic spirit of this site. The point here would be to take normal or even poor quality photography in order to restore them in photoshop and post it as a before and after photography like this.
MinimalistTake a shot that uses the smallest range of materials and colours possible of something with a very simple shape or form.
Micro Could be insides of computers, microscope photographs, Homies to Micro Machines, model railroads...etc.

Incriminating:
Take your best shot of something incriminating.

Animals in unusual places: a kitten in a shoe, a goat in a car, a bug on the nose of a dog.

mulligan: Choose any challenge that you have previously particiapated in and take a new photo as if you were entering that challenge again. Your title should contain the name of the challenge. Editing rules are either Basic or Advanced as per previous challenge.

Murals painted on buildings: Graffiti, intentional art, take your best picture of something painted on a buildling.

distance: The extent of space between two objects or places; an intervening space.

A couple would limit those of us with less sophisticated cameras or editing software . . . . but most sound really interesting otherwise!

Someone at work told me about an exhibit related to this. The pictures were of the last meals of prisoners on death row (I know morbid subject). The impact of the photos came from their perspective. They were taken in such a way that gave you the impression that you were the one sitting at the table looking at the plate of food.

You missed two of my suggestions, of which I would love to see realized.

Eyes - Focus on eyes, in some sort of artistic manner.
De-motivational Posters - The opposite of Motivational posters, with a humerous twist.
