I don't read photography magazines, never have. But a fiend wants to get her nephew a subscription for Christmas, he recently got a DSLR. Can you recommend a good one? She lives in the US.

I get Rangefinder, Aftercapture, and NPPA at home. I used to get PopPhoto and shutterbug. But have dropped them.

Popular Photography is good, especially for someone new to photography. Plenty of articles, reviews, and of course advertisements to entice you. :-)

the only one I ever subscribed to, years ago, was Outdoor Photographer. Back in the days when I wanted to be like Galen Rowell.

I've subscribed to most of them over the years. The American ones are almost universally rubbish, with superficial articles and lots of ads. Reviews and such are always well out of date and much smaller than anything online.

PhotoLife from Canada is not too bad (but pricey to get a subscription in the US). I quite often pick up a copy of it. The best one by far is Practical Photography from the UK, least it was a few years ago, but again more expensive than a typical American rag.

I subscribed to Lenswork for a few years but it has drifted from where it once was - seems more self indulgent to Brooks own work & his friends, which is fair enough, given it is his magazine.

Practical Photography is one of the best here in UK, Amateur Photographer is good too. Pass this one to your 'fiend' from me:))

Recently I've started picking up random copies of some of the UK magazines and I have to say, although more expensive, they're very good magazines ... depending on the budget, it's something to consider ...

Personally, I prefer Digital Camera from the UK. A little pricey here in the US tho. they can be bought at most really good book stores. The web address is" www.dcmag.co.uk

i'm getting colorfoto magazine here in germany mostly because of its great and really detailed lens and camera tests (both lab and practice tests). it's in german though.
during my stay in iceland i got shutterbug for some time and kinda liked it.

and of course NG and sometimes vogue (italian or french issue) for the great photos they show! ;)
