Me and my friend will be having a long weekend in Reykjavik next week. Does anyone have some recommendations for places to see during our stay? Hiring a car is a possibility.

Thanks

Between the beauty in the landscape and the beauty of the two legged kind, I'm sure there wont be any issues finding something to shoot. I'm envious that you are headed there.

It so much depends on how you are going to spend this weekend. Are you coming here to stay in the Reykjavík area, vining and dining, museums, art galleries and stuff like that... OR are you going to spend the weekend going outside of Reykjavík?? There are so many things you can see if you drive for an hour or so outside Reykjavík but on the other hand there are so many things to be seen inside Reykjavík also?? so... your plans are??? :o)

We have open plans, spending some time in Reykjavík and some time outside if there's something to see and/or do that we can get to and from in a day.

I'd love to visit Reykjavik some time. Maybe one day I will. If I do, I'll hunt down Larus and make him teach me how to do kickass portraits!

I've got some other questions:

I've looked in some guides to Iceland and they don't say which side of the road you drive on. It would be nice to know in advance if we're going to have to swap sides!

Is there any kind of smoking ban the same way there is here in the UK? As neither of us smoke, I'm just asking to be fore-warned again.

What kind of exchange rate is there at the moment? Due to the current financial situation we can't buy IKr in the UK, so we can't estimate the cost of things. How much it would cost to buy UK pounds in Iceland would be a good start.

Thanks,

Kevin

Now I have a post-trip question:

We went dog-sledding, but due to too much snow on the road to the glacier (Mýrdalsjökull), and not enough on the glacier, we went to the beach and were towed on a trolley instead of a sled:

(picture hosted on flickr)

What I'd like to know is the name of the area we did this. The object we are travelling to is a crashed US Navy DC3, and it's off Route 1 between Skógarfoss and Vík. Doing a search on Google gives ambiguous answers and I'd like to know what is correct.

Thanks

The black desert beach is called Sólheimasandur, named after the glacier Sólheimajökull and its river that created it.
