Hey. I'm a returning member here. I was last on this site three years ago with a Canon PowerShot A80 4.0MP camera. Now I have a 50D and I'm going to school for "Photographic Arts."
Anyways, for the longest time I've taken pictures of all sorts of random stuff. Buildings, flowers, random objects, etc.
I really needed to start doing some portrait photographs so I found this guy Jeff Hahn who is an unsigned guitar player just trying to start up a music career. He has two upcoming shows, and I told him I would do some photographs for him for free (although he did give me a CD and buy me a drink).
I just have a kit lens for now, so I had to use that. Also, I have no lighting of any sort and prefer not to use flash since it creates harsh shadows. I would have liked to do a day shoot, but I actually think the night shots turned out ok.
So I just walked around town with him and looked for good locations that at least had some available light, and then I tried to compose a good shot and take it. Thank you 2000/3200ISO and IS technology. Let me know what you think. Please critique so that I know what to look for in future shots.
Not portraits, but same photo-shoot:
Try to focus in on composition, pose, and background rather than lighting (since I didn't have much control over that). Unless it's lighting in relation to the pose of the model (ie. "Should have had him turn his face to the left to allow for highlights/shading.").
I am already working to do a photo-shoot with a local band that does a lot of shows around here. The Righs. They have a very similar sound to Flogging Molly. Will be fun.
All comments and critiques welcomed and appreciated.
