Ok,

So I'm getting mixed signals when asking different folks on this and I'm hoping someone out there might help me out.

I have been hired over the past few years to photograph theatre productions for a local university. I would like to branch out and offer my services to other theatre groups in the area. In putting together my website I am unsure in the area of model releases.

Since it is a performance that I was hired to shoot do I need model releases from the individual actors if I would like to use the images on my website as an example of my work? Can I perhaps get a release from the university to cover all productions that I shoot for them?

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

David

The first thing to clarify is whether you or the university holds the copyright to the photos -- if you were "hired" to take the photos, they may belong to the school, not to you, under the "work for hire" provision of the copyright law.

Otherwise, you should be able to use the images on your website for promotional purposes without a release. You would need a release to sell copies or to post/license the image for stock use.

You should be able to find out more at the US COpyright Office
