So, I nonchalantly copy (or so I thought)the files from my client's card to my work computer (graphic designer/sign maker) using the computer's card reader (which works fine for my camera's card). go to open them with bridge, and they won't open. discover I didn't copy, i moved. GAH!!!

They're RAF files from a fuji finepix. any ideas? he can't get the shots again (sneaky surprise party prep stuff), and i feel like a fool. he's being very nice, but i'm still feeling awful.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try here and see if that info helps.

And what you do you mean "moved"? If you still have the files on your computer, you can copy them back to the card, yes?

They are on the computer, but by the time we got around to the file transfer (it's a HUGE project) i was late to pick up the sprog, so i said 'i'll figure it out and hustled him out the door. i checked, and cs2 does have fuji as a compatible thingy in camera raw, so i dunno why this is happening. di, if all else fails, it would be fab if you can figure this out. they're at work tonight, but i'll email them to myself tomorrow, so i can work on th stuff at home this weekend.

deb, i'll peruse that file in a bit! hopefully there'll be words of wisdom in it!

Try upgrading the raw capabilities with CS2...it should open the files

I'll try and open them if you still need help.

ok, i'll try again tomorrow at work, and see how it goes. i may be whining on here again then!

When you "move" files, all your computer does is copies them across and deletes them from the card. But there's a chance that when you copied them, they didn't copy properly. If that's the case, your only good files are still on the card & you would have to recover them with recovery software--just don't write/copy any files over the top.

From the sounds of it though, you're surprised by the file type?
If it's just an issue of not being able to open a raf file, try converting it to an adobe camera raw file (try here)--then your version of photoshop should be able to open anything you throw at it.

... not true ... for example, I had to upgrade to photoshop cs4 from cs2 to open my Nikon D60 NEF files ... (even cs3 did not accept a high enough camera raw upgrade to do it) in photoshop ... but ... you can always try Irfanview which is free for all non commercial use and opens just about anything (of course you need do download their free plugins set too) and you can save it as just about anything. It works with my Nikon D60 NEF files ... //Irfanview.com ... just a thought ...

Just because it opens SOME fuji raw files does not mean it opens every fuji model's raw files. They can change from model to model and Photoshop only supplies camera raw updates for so long for each version of photoshop ... Camera Raw ver 5+ does not work with cs2 for example and is what was needed for my Nikon.

Do you happen to have lightroom 2? I would bet you could convert them over to DNG or Tiffs or something from there. If you cant get them open send me one to matt@mattophotography.com and I can try and convert it to whatever type of file you want. If I can do it, snail mail me the files, I'll convert them and send them back in a format you can use(if you have that type of time)

Matt

Edit to add, if you dont have Lightroom, there is a 30 day trial period, download it, convert the files, open and edit in your normal manner.

What I meant was to *convert* the files into the Adobe file format--the "dng" format. Because the format has been around about five years, your old version of photoshop and adobe camera raw will be able to read the (dng) file...

Irfanview will probably open the file, but has no controls for adjusting exposure etc, so you'll get better quality by using Photoshop & the adobe camera raw converter on the dng file...

The current Fuji models that you can convert into dng are these:
FinePix E900
FinePix F700
FinePix IS-1
FinePix IS Pro
FinePix S100FS
FinePix S2 Pro
FinePix S20 Pro
FinePix S3 Pro
FinePix S5 Pro
FinePix S5000 Z
FinePix S5200/5600
FinePix S6000fd/S6500fd
FinePix S7000 Z
FinePix S9000/9500
FinePix S9100/9600

If your model is listed, I'd check out converting (link)... or, you could just use your fuji software CD...

hope you get it all situated.

OK, Irfanview sorted it! these aren't my files, they're the client's, so i have no fuji software. but, i opened them, and they're not that good anyway, so we'll go with another shot instead. gah, what a lot of hassle for nothing.

thanks very much for all the advice, though!

I know I am late to the game. Just found and joined this place today. I am coning from this as a computer person rather than a photographer but I noticed one suggestion was not given I think important enough to post even after the fact.

Since you are accidentally Moved the files, and the only copies of them are on your hard drive, the first thing to do before trying any recommended methods for opening the file is to make a copy of them to another folder on your hard drive. Having a backup in this kind of situation can be invaluable.
