Hello all,

As I always find myself walking around back and forth from work without my big DLSR and always wishing I had my camera with me, I decided to get a small P&S. But I don't know anything about them. What would you guys suggest under $300? Nikon, Canon, Panasonic? Why?

I would also like the option of putting it in manual mode. Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Pascal

My girlfriend just got a Canon Powershot A590 IS and I have to say, I'm impressed with it, as far as P&S's go. It has a full range of manual modes, takes really nice images, and the IS helps a lot. Easy control layout, nice macro mode, acceptable noise up to about ISO 400 (gets pretty noisy when you reach ISO 1600).

Granted, it won't ever be a DSLR, and it doesn't shoot RAW - but for a carry-around camera, I'd suggest it.

Best of all, it runs about $180.

If I was in the market for a P&S, I would definitively buy a Powershot SX10 IS.

That Canon is a great camera, but doesn't come across as 'small' compared to some other choices for small P&S cameras available on the market..

Sony's range of pocket digital cameras are very compact, my T200 slots in my back pocket with ease.

I guess the term "small" is relative :-) Yes, it is bigger than the little toy ones, but compared to what so many of us lug around everywhere, it is tiny!
