Please can somebody help me identify this caterpillar.
Found in SW England, April, happily munching comfrey leaves.

Thanks

Looks like the caterpillar of the large white butterfly.
Just do a search on google I am sure you will find plenty of info.
Paul.

Thank you Paul.

I've looked at the images on Google. The markings on 'my' one look much brighter yellow and more regular than the 'Google' ones. But I don't know much about caterpillars and how much variation there can be within a species. I'm sure it's something pretty common though, there were certainly a lot of them there!

I have this exact caterpillar in front of me, not sure how to upload a photo but will try. I am veering towards the Small Tortoiseshell but there is also a possibility it is the Large White - can someone please tell me how to add the photo?

You need to have it online at some other site, like your web page, or smugmug, or flickr, wherever. Then you copy the URL of the image and use the little square "insert image" icon above the text box when you reply here. If the image is larger than 500 pixels or so, use the globe icon to "insert hyperlink" and that leaves a clickable link to the larger image. Or become a paid member and have a portfolio all your own right on DPC to which you may post images :-)
