Maybe better to keep your 40D...
10/30/2008 09:16:07 AM · #2
Of particular interest (to me at least) is the second half of page 18, which shows that noise performance is worse than the 40D, though it doesn't seem to take into account the relative image sizes - scale the 40D image up (or the 50D image down) and they may be closer to equal.

Lower on the page it's revealed that RAW shots have more noise than JPEG with "Noise reduction OFF" setting. Indicating that NR is not truly "OFF" in JPEG mode, even if set as such.

Still, on the feature comparison chart on page 1, the 50D seems to win over the 40D in almost every category, including sRAW options, LCD, live view AF, and of course, pixel count.

does anyone actually use sRAW though? Im yet to find a use for it in all honesty.

The other options it has seem less-than-revolutionary also and i was suprised they got rid of one of the custom settings in favour of 'advanced auto' mode which i dont think was the best decision they could have made.

With regards to noise, maybe a better option would have been to create a 12.5mp-13mp sensor and keep it there. I think that, along with the LCD improvements and processing upgrade would have made a much better camera with better noise performance than it has... still, its a nice camera, ill just stick with my 40D until the 5d MK2 makes an appearance.

I'm pretty damn disappointed in this. I was probably going to get one. Now I might get the 5D Mark II, but I'm worried that it will be a big loser, too.

Well, it's not bad - especially for the price, but it's less stellar than I was hoping for. I was considering a 50D now instead of a 5DII later, but that thought died quickly. Let's hope the 5DII really performs. But all the professional reviews I've read are very positive indeed, and the samples look great. 1080 HD video is icing on the cake.

If the 50D had had 720 HD video, it would have been a more difficult decision.

It is by all means not a bad camera, it is just that Canon has found the limit of what is the possible mp size and that is the 40D, because it is clear that the 50D is a step too far. More noise and less dynamic range (IMO far more important) is not what you expect from Canon. They lost that lead.

But let's be clear here, who needs more mp? If you really need more rent or buy a FF. If you want to crop more and more, buy a longer zoom or teleconverter. I'm still happy with 6, altough I might switch to 12 because of the improved noise performance of the newer Nikons.

you guys are making me worry that I just made a bad decision! I realize the 50D is a HUGE upgrade from the XT, but now I'm wondering if I shoulda saved the cash and gone with a 40D ... my 50D is set to be delivered on Monday ...

Either will be a great camera - I think that some of us were hoping for better image quality over the 40D, and it didn't happen.

If I were you, I'd assume image quality is roughly equal, check out the feature comparison list and read the full review, then decide if it's worth the extra cash.

Some of the neat little differentiators: much nicer LCD, ISO3200 in the base range, AF adjustments per lens, better sRAW options, HDMI connection...

I am looking to upgrade in the future to either a XTI, but probably a 50d but that damn new 5D has me drooling. Cant make up my mind yet...

I'm fairly certain you won't be disappointed.

I KNOW that I won't ... I'm just wondering if I could have saved some cash and been just as happy with the 40D ...

Yes, you probably would have been just as happy with the 40d. But there's something nice about having the latest and greatest.

I've had my 50d for a whole day, haven't even managed to take it outside the house, and it's fairly clear to me that this is an excellent piece of equipment.

High ISO performance seems pretty good to me - ISO 1600 is very clean. At ISO 3200 there's certainly some noise, but a) the images are still very usable and b) it's probably no worse at ISO 3200 than my old camera was at 800.

15.1 megapixels may be tough for many lenses to live up to, but it's fun to have them to play with - if for no other reason than you can crop an image in half and still have a lot of pixels to do with what you will.

There are a lot of compelling reasons to go with the 50D over the 40D, IMO. The *only* concern is the slight reduction in Dynamic Range, and honestly, that is not going to be a perceptible impact for reasonably well-exposed images in 99.9% of all situations.

I think canon views this body as a consumer body,or else their engineering director is very market 'feature' driven. Who needs 15mp? Why the advanced auto? Best Buy sales I suppose (compare to THIS camera....). Stupid IMO. 12mp would have been plenty - 20% more and that might have helped with the noise issue -which was a canon strong point until recently.

As for sRAW I use it for many things and its' a tad small on the 40D at 2.5Mp for many uses, but I shot a county fair and did the whole thing in sRAW. It'll print 8x10s. Could probably shoot a whole wedding in it to be honest.
I think I'll be getting a 5D2 and will us sRAW1 all the time - 11 mp? That's more than I have now! I have no earthly need for 21mp. None whatsoever. As it is i've cross cropped (make a horizontal out of a vertical) and printed it 12x18 and had no issues. That's working with a 4Mp image more or less. My one assistant shoots an original 1D -a 4Mp body, and regularly makes 16x20 prints from it.
