This may be somewhere on the site already but is there a way to show our place for overall average for every member on the site. It would be cool to know how many members there are on the site and to know how you rate compared to everyone.

Just an idea...

20187 users/members currently. To find average unfortunately you have to go check everybody's profile.

Sounds like a lot of work.. lol

Do you mean an overall site average? I'd like to see that too. Maybe on the "My Profile" page right along side your personal average. Updated after each challenge of course. Can we do it Admins.? Please........

That's an excellent idea, and it's a good way to mesure our own improvement and compare with the other photographers

Seems like another reason to get hooked on the site and to work hard on improvement..great idea.

Great idea!

I would say that in order to do something like this we'd want to only include people who have submitted to, say, 10 challenges or more. OR just use the average of everyone's top 10 scores to rank?

Otherwise, someone could show up, score a 7 on their first shot, and then sit at the top of the list without ever having to lift a finger. :)

Count me in! This is a great idea. In addition to the overall site average, how about a percentage ranking per individual, - similar to the ranking we see for a challenge after final results are tabulated? (I think this is what eostyles is asking for in his original post here...?)

just to play advocate, this might actually serve to discourage people from taking chances and shooting out-of-the-box. If one bad score affects your average, you may not want to try new things. and we may never have had the opportunity to see this gem: . that would be very sad :)

other than that i like the idea.

I'd hazzard guess that the entire site avg. right now sits at around 5.3 or 5.4. It would take quite a bit of effort to tabulate this manually. What's wrong with getting this tabulated through Java/XML/or whatever code (not a geek so I don't exactly know how it would be processed - just guessing) and displayed to be used as a benchmark. I don't see anything discouraging about that, do you?

not at all - I was more referring to the above suggestion of ranking everyone. Personally I'd find it encouraging (because I'm competitive like that), but I was just presenting an alternate argument for the sake of doing so.

While it would be cool to see, and i am in favor of it, this is done at another site i hang around. The scoring there is a tad different, so the numbers one has to play with will vary of course. (there you pick and 'rank' your top ten pics in the challenge, and they get points from 10 for first to 1 for tenth. most points wins. And nobody gets 1s to complain about LOL)

There you have to have been in 3 challenges to get ranked at all.
You got a total point count (the ranking is done from this) and an average per challenge point count. #8 on the list has a higher average per challenge than anyone else in the top 20 or so, and the third highest overall and has been in 8 challenges. #1 in overall points has been in 18 challenges and averages 234. #3 has an average of only 136 per...

interesting, but once one has a large number of challenges behind them, then their ranking will not move much.

Perhaps an overall from day 1 aveage / rank and a 'last 10 challenges' average / rank. Lets you see how you are doing recently - if you are improving or taking chances you can watch the 'last 10' results more closely.

On a similar note, why not display the current rank of your photo in the challenge it is entered in, with a few on either side for reference? Displaying the average score for the challenge, as well as the standard deviation, would be another very good way to provide feedback on how well the photo is doing.

Seeing the score is nice, but stats without something to reference them against are rather ...well, pointless.
