I am sure it's been said before but looked back quickly over the last two pages and couldn't find a recent request for it so here goes :)

I think it would be good to make voting 1,2 and 3 require a comment (and possibly even put the score in the comment box) as I feel this would help stop people voting seriously low unfairly, also I think this would help keep the true trolls off the site to some degree. I suspect a fair amount of tactical voting goes on (and possibly more so at the moment with the DCPO III taking place as reading the scores threads this last 2 weeks everyone seems to be reporting terribly low scores in comparison to their usual scores). Creating a system similar to this would help highlight and deal with this sort of voting as it would be pretty easy to then spot patterns of dishonest / tactical voting members.

As I say I am sure this would have been suggested before but thought it worth mentioning again to see what the current response is like.

I agree that requiring comments for votes of 3 and under would seriously deter trolling.

I think that this subject comes up every 3 months with the same conclusion. Basically if you did that, then 5 would be the new 1. Would be nice though, I am thinking electric shocks on the keyboards might work too!

This should be interesting, wonder if it will end up the same way it does every time. (me crying)

No it wouldn't. People would just start voting 4 and higher and then people would be complaining about all the 4s they got.

Part of the problem are the countless threads that bemoan all the 1s, 2s, and 3s they get and call the people who vote such "trolls," stupid and an assortment of other names that I don't have time to go into right now. Yea, every image seems to get a few, but if it is only one or two votes on an image, it doesn't seem like much of a problem (there is no accounting for taste, perhaps), and if there is a bunch of 'em, maybe it was just a bad image. It happens.

Forcing a comment isn't going to eliminate trolls, increase comments, or do anything other than raise your scores because requiring a comment would just make them vote higher.

Yes I agree 4 would probably become the new 1 where trolls are concerned but then their votes are not realistic anyway they are purely trying to ruin the system. I feel any true voter that wanted to give a 1,2 or 3 would be prepared to comment on it (I know I would and do) so it wouldn't affect the outcome of the challenge except for making the score more realistic if there were no dishonest / troll like voters on here.

Here's one of the many post regarding this.

I disagree. Those that are willing to give a comment will do so now, required or not.

Requiring it only aggravates those who vote honestly, and won't deter the "trolls." And, if it is not intended to do the latter, what purpose would it serve?

As far as what you call tactical voting -- requiring a comment only makes it more difficult to detect because now we have three less low numbers to look for.

If I leave you a 1, 2 or 3 consider the 'this photo sucks' comment to be implied.

There you go again, distilling the whole discussion down to a sentence. :O

Ahh stupid place to put it in current challenge forum haha! Sorry Prash ;)

Yeah Karmat I see your point, I guess as mentioned there will always be Trolls or other stupid names ;) doesn't make getting the votes any less annoying though, just have to hope the scrubber does its thang!

Ohh DJWoodward thanks for the links they are REALLY helpful, except again it's another one in a place one would not really look for it, ooh and by the same author ;)

Okay thanks I will, just leave me a little image of a violin in the comments box and I will attribute it to you!

You're welcome Mark. Actually these and many others are not hard to find. Just search the forums for the word comments.

Yes, but without a comment you shield yourself from being accountable for your opinion through the anonymity of the voting system.

If your comment of "this photo sucks" was right there in the photo's discussion thread, people (including the photographer) could have the opportunity to agree or disagree with you.

To use a military analogy, voting low without commenting is like a cowardly commando sneaking into enemy territory plant land mines, while leaving a comment elevates one to the level of kamikaze ...

I'm opposed to mandatory comments of any kind, but think it is the honorable and responsible thing for a voter to take responsibility for (if not justify) their low votes.

Actually that is exactly what I did before I searched the last 2 pages here, none of the threads you have posted come up in the first 2 pages, I thought it must have been mentioned before but I didn't spend anymore than maybe 5 minutes looking I grant you.

Actually I search for "Comments" in the Subject only and these are on the first page. That helps when you are filtering for a common word like "Comments"

I find the easiest way to search this site is to use google. Just include site:dpchallenge.com in the search box along with your keywords.

It's all good, as I said 2 or 3 times I was fairly sure it had been mentioned before (I wasn't aware it was as recent as the Prash threads though) but with the current situation on the scoring threads thought it worth a mention.

Mods feel free to delete this thread it bothers me no more and I am off to bed now after a cr4p day that is best forgotten :)
