and ....SOCCER MOMS!!! lol

I keep repeating that because they keep slowing traffic down in the mornings taking their kids to school when we all have perfect and functional buses that can pick up their kids and take them to school....lol

Hey, my wife's a soccer mom! But she walks the kidlets to school.

How 'bout some scenes from "Desperate Housewives".... errr.... not that I watch that show...

Desperate housewives are all way to perfect as are thier houses, lawns etc.

Soccer mums (or in the UK women with 4x4's they seem unable to drive)
Indoor pets
Window box gardens
Road sweepers
Street lights

OOO loads of things. Just need to narrow it down to a good idea now!

Gated communities that don't work. The people seem to keep breaking out of them and running all over the countryside around here. : P

I'm thinking identikit houses jammed in together, soccer moms in yoga pants, minivans and SUVs(which are NEVER driven offroad, gawd ferbid!!!) kids at playdates as opposed to just unstructured running-around... should be fun to shoot!

I love it that they added to the challenge description "And keep it interesting". Yes. . .THAT is the challenge! And I fear we will see quite a few who don't keep up that end of the challenge. I'll be wracking my brain all week -- but bravo to more creative minds than mine to be able to think of the "interesting" part early on :)

For a different view of suburbia (and maybe some good photo ideas) check out the movie The End of Suburbia or listen to the Kunstler Cast or read any of James Howard Kunstler's books like The Long Emergency or the Geography of Nowhere for criticism of how suburbia and ignorant urban planning has really screwed up the USA.

I have a feeling that this could be something that differs according to the country you come from....

Damn, I wish I knew my new neighbours... I have some ideas but, as usual, they won't happen.

I find most surbanites in NAmerica are terrified of something happening to them, their children, their property...name it. What happened to the place where I grew up in the 70s, where we'd take off on our bikes all day and go gawd knows where, and do gawd knows what, until suppertime. Nowadays I see moms watching like hawks as their little darlings walk two houses down to the neighbours for a structured playdate. Sad.

And we never locked our doors.

And it was OK to go trick-or-treating...with UNICEF boxes no less!

I know what you mean. We used to go in the woods until dark and then come home. Ride our bikes up and down the country roads and never had to fear about someone hurting us. Now I'm afraid to give comfort to a little one who is crying for fear that the parents will think I'm a child molester. Heavens forbid that I take pictures of the children play ball!

Is it legal to apply a texture in advanced editing to whole/part of the image? A texture layer is also a filter in the sense it locally changes an image to my understanding.

Is it allowed?

Ok found some answers in this thread. I think I will NOT use textures as of now.

You are all talking about Suburbs in America. But when you think of suburbs you can also think of the poor-suburbs of a big city in Africa, isn't it?

Like this: Suburb

Is that also oke for this contest?

Wikipedia:

Suburbs are commonly defined as residential areas on the outskirts of a city or large town. Most suburbs in the U.S. are commuter towns with a prevalence of detached[1] single-family homes.[2] Many suburbs have some degree of political autonomy, and most have lower population density than inner city neighborhoods. Mechanical transport, including automobiles and high speed trains, enabled the 20th century growth of suburbs, which tend to proliferate near cities with an abundance of adjacent flat land.[3]

In many parts of the globe, however, suburbs are economically poor areas, inhabited by people sometimes in real misery, keeping them at the limit of the city borders for economic or social reasons like the impossibility of affording the (usually higher) costs of life in the town.

I like the idea of American Beauty or even Desperate Housewives. Sickly sweet on the outside, rotten on the inside. That would take some challenge to capture and I'm not sure it would score well, but it would be some sweet action.

I'm expecting a picture of an insanely angry neighbor standing in his driveway waving a gun around. Don't dissapoint me. :P
