I was wondering...I just submitted one of my photos, and I have been getting nothing but great comments about it, yet my average score is still pretty low. Is there a lot of people out there who just score low, or just don't give any comments? I kind've want to know a little more about how I could make the photo better!

Some people will leave a comment if they score a photo under 5, but mostly people dont. Partly because if you tell someone something bad about their image they usually PM with not very nice things back. I think a lot of people are comment shy. Some people vote first and comment later. You could also post the image in the forums after the challenge to get additional comments, or make sure you request a comment from the critique club as they often give insightful comments.

It seems rude to PM someone about their comments-unless the commenter has specifically asked to be PM'd. PM-ing someone because they left you an unlikeable comment may get you a lower score from them in return.

I don't think this would happen as nobody knows who they are voting for when they vote - the entries are anonymous until after voting finishes.

I have only PM'd one person for a comment and it was because I felt they were challenging me.

And I've added to a couple of posts about comments including comments I'd received. But actually they weren't bad comments in the respect that they were being rude about my pic and I was trying to be spiteful, more that they were just plain strange and I didn't know what way to take them. Believe me, some people leave some odd comments (which I try to attribute to the language barrier where they are not native English speakers) that just beg to be questioned....

I dont find the PM´s a problem. If I see something in images that I dont like and think that could be better performed I leave a comment (I also leave positive comments). I´ve got some PM´s back but not very many and I cant remeber that they have been "not very nice".
Just think it´s important to be honest and bring out some resons.

I also try to leave comments on both the good and bad photos. Some challenges I just don't get to at all, but when I do vote and comment I try to do a high percentage. In all my commenting, I haven't yet received even one pm that was rude or even unhappy. I have received several which thanked me for taking to time to comment.

I've had many comments that describe what the commenter feels are ways to improve my image. If expressed tactfully, a comment supporting a low vote (1-4) should never offend. For example, rather than stating "great idea, but poorly executed", wouldn't it be better to say "great idea, however, if you increased the contrast and tonal range, I believe the image would be more appealing...".

I believe you can ALWAYS get your point across in positive terms (...unless, of course, your point is to offend).

"I don't think this would happen as nobody knows who they are voting for when they vote - the entries are anonymous until after voting finishes. "

When PMing many people decribe their shots to you-or just tell you the title-that is how a commentor can ruin your score if you T them off with a PM. So I avoid responding to anything in general-until afterwards & usually only if it is positive or constructive criticism:)

edit :poor spelling

BINGO :)
It's just a matter of how you word it. I try to be thoughtful in my wording & point out positives & possible improvements.

There's a stat at the end of voting that will give you the average of all commentators. This averages is usually above your final average if you score over 5.0 (Average score).
