My PC hardware gave out on me over the weekend and I had bought all the pieces necessary to upgrade to a Quad Core with 2 Gigs of memory and a nice vid card.

I have a persistent co-worker (lets call him Goede lol) that keeps giving me grief over my decision of still upgrading to windows and not buying a Mac.

My un-expected pc upgrade cost me 600 and a new Mac would cost me at least 1300.

Is it really worth paying double for it?
What's the general consensus from the photographer community?

The Mac is better for people who prefer a Mac and PCs are better for people who prefer PCs. It all depends on your own personal preferences and workflow. I suggest you take a disc of images to an Apple Store and try one out for yourself.

On no, not the PC vs Mac wars again. I'll get the popcorn.

I had the same issue last year and came to the realization that it is very easy have both. I have a MacBook, but I run both OSX and Vista on it - through a nice program called Boot Camp. I find that I use Vista a lot more as I had licenses for programs on Windows that I didn't want give up or repurchase - NeatImage, Portrait Professional, etc. Since all the Macs are now Intel-based, Windows runs incredibly on the MacBook hardware. Additionally, I have CS3 on both operating systems and there is virtually no difference in performance on either side.

Hope this helps.

IMO, Mac is better...period.

I'm still shopping for a used laptop and I still ask myself if I should try a Mac out, just because I can. Laptop won't be used for editing much since I'm looking for an older machine but I do want to use it tethered and as storage while on the road or on vacation.

Here are some other threads pertaining to this dilemma.

Blondes aren't known for their realism.

I have used both for a long time (although no mac in the last couple of years) and IMO... Mac's have the better interface & usability when things goes pear shaped by a mile. Windoze stole "innovated" enough of the interface to make vista competitive if you have the hardware to run it (I suggest a cray or other small super-computer). My issue is that despite the swap to intel, they are still selling at a premium - and it's too much for me.

As an aside, The latest micro$oft ads prove without question that apple have better marketing people... I cringe at their ads and I hope they paid zero dollars cause that is what they are worth (although Jerry is not likely to come cheap).

Pepsi, Nikon, PC, Firefox, Obama, Cats, Socialism, Less Megapixels FTW!

Seriously though, yeah, whichever you like to use more. Photoshop works the same on either. Both have image viewers, both can transfer images to and from your camera cards.

Sorry Zeus, but blondes are definitely pro-Mac. ;-)

I've used both and they both have their strong points. The ideal for me would be a Mac OS that I could install on a beige box that I built myself. A few of the bells a whistles that windows has would be nice to add to it.

PC is better because you can buy a lense with the money you save!

I read an article not long ago that said the macbook pro runs vista better than any other notebook on the market... I would guess it is the same synopsis for a desktop.
