This was my entry for March-

It received an average score and only 5 comments.

Do you think I would have done better with a different crop?

Or what if I had entered-

or-

I had intended to enter the second one. Then I read a photography book that suggested that when photographing animals/people/bugs their eyes should be visable. So I changed my selection. Should I have ignored this "rule". Or is it just not a good photo? To be honest at full size and resolution it looks better (the bees' eyes cover w/ pollen). I'm sure that could be said for my peoples pics.

I like the picture. I am pretty much a horticulturist at heart and enjoy macros of all the different flowers. But I think the problem with the picture is the subject. I just don't think there are a lot of people who vote high on flower shots because there are so many entered.

I personally like the entry best. But I am still far from having a good phtgpher eye. :)

That's just my opinion.

I prefer the second one. In the first one, it's hard to make out the entire bee. It looks more like severed pieces of a bee on the flower. In the second one, although the eyes may not be visible, the entire bee is clearly defined. I think that including the eyes is a bonus when dealing with animals with eyes to which we can relate. Bug eyes are so different than what we normally see as eyes that it doesn't make as big an impact (exceptions are the macros of bug's eyes showing the hundreds of lenses which I really like). The third picture looks too gimmicky. The selected desaturation just doesn't work for me there. Besides, there are a few pieces of pollen outside the focal area that are still colored and are distracting. I guess you could clone those out though.

Non-the-less, I vote for #2, not that the others are bad.

You forgot the first rule of DPC -- the picture you do NOT submit is always better than the one you do. And in this case, that's certainly true! I vote for #2, and they're all quite pretty!

LOL

The truth is, once again, I should have listened to my wife.
