The last two weeks, as my renewal notice appeared on my home page I felt as if I was at a crossroads on whether I wanted to continue with DPC or not. I finally broke down and continued my membership thinking that it has been beneficial being a member. There were highs and lows, and along the way some fun. But then as my last two images I submitted were getting hammered for no apparent reason (I say that because despite the 1's and 2's I am receiving there hasn't been a single comment to explain the low vote), I decided that the reservations I had toward renewing my membership were correct. I faced the realization that DP Challenge is no longer a site that I enjoy. My photography is suited around taking images that are real and capture a moment in time, not images that are staged with overused costumes and redundant themes. I just can't compete with the high scores being given to the DPC Friendly images, so it is time for me to go.

I was always disapointed that the DPL was never renewed, and that was really the main reason why I renewed last year. In the end, I feel the crossroads that I reached are a sign that it is a time to move on, and have submitted a ticket to see if I can't get my subscription renewed since I haven't entered into the subscription period.

I am thankful for all that I learned while I was here, for the people I have met in person, and those that I only met online.

Best of luck to all of you in your careers and in all of your future endeavors.

It has been fun, but it is time to say goodbye.

It's not that you can't compete, it's that you choose not to. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's probably best to be honest with yourself.

Good luck in following your photography wherever it may take you.

Ben, it was cool to be on your DPL team and I have enjoyed your help along the way. I too struggled with renewing this past year, but took the plunge anyway. I will continue to compete this year until this subscription ends, but will not renew at that time. I used to have a blast on DPC. Now I ignore more threads then I read and have seen this site fall into "the same old thing" in challenges. I still enjoy viewing the non challenge entries and participating in side challenges. Like yourself, I do not wish to conform to the "FRIENDLY" images to win a virtual ribbon. You will be missed and I wish you the best. Keep in touch.

Thanks for your time here Ben, and I hope you keep your interest in photography. Your comments about DPC are very true. You can certainly learn a lot about photography working on the challenges here, and the community support is great, but the scores reflect a particular flavour of generic mass-market appeal, and not how much a powerful image can mean to an individual. I am always conscious of DPC-ifying images that I submit. :)

Anyway, I hope you have enjoyed this part of your journey. Bon voyage.

Sounds like you know that you have gone as far as you can with DPC. If it's not fun and you are no longer getting anything out of it, I can certainly understand.

I try to interpret the scores I do receive, and I believe that above a certain point, it is less a matter of good photography and more a matter of broad appeal. Thank you for reminding me of that.

I bookmarked your own website so I can check in and see what you are doing now and then.
