I may be guilty of this myself, so this is a reminder to me too, but can we PLEASE add comments to pictures that are given a score of 3 or less? This is really the only way to learn. PLEASE!

It is tough to get those comments unless your entry is outstanding or really bad. I do my part. As you already suggested, your own commenting ratio is pretty low. The best way to help resolve the problem is to be part of the solution and set an example. You will also find that commenting and making yourself figure out why you do or don't like a particular entry is one of the best ways of improving your own photography.

BTW, just in case you missed it, commenting on 100% of an challenge, gets you some nice bling for your profile page! 100% comments club

Wer're all guilty of it. The way I handle it is not to score lower than a 4 (!). Okay, once in a while...

Seems I remember a reminder popping up when you would score something a 3 or less. Does that still happen?

No, they eliminated that earlier this year.

Comments are not the only way to learn. If someone is serious about learning they could, would and should embark on a course of self study including reading about photographic technique, studying and analyzing the works of well known photographers, studying composition, studying lighting, etc, etc, etc. Most of which the Internet makes possible without even leaving the home.

Ok I don't mean, it's the ONLY way to learn. But if someone gives you a low score, it sure helps to understand why. I try to put comments on all images I rate less than 4. But I think that reminder thing popping up was a great idea. Why did they eliminate that?!

I dont think many people liked thaht.. from what I have read, that was creating a voting bias where people would give a 4 instead of <4 to avoid having to comment.

I had started another thread on similar topic, if you are interested.. and I got a mixed response... actually most of them suggesting making it mandatory isnt a good idea. I am still in favor, but whos to make a call:-)

Should commenting be mandatory?

ETA: If you ask me, just as we have at least 20% voting mandatory in a challenge, we should make commenting on those 20% mandatory.

Oooh, I didn't mean to stir up trouble. I don't think commenting should be mandatory - sometimes I barely have time to vote much less comment. But I do think that it should be encouraged, especially for the low votes.

Yep - under "You should:", in the Voting Rules. Not mandatory, but it is encouraged - "technically". :-)

The nag window was in effect when I joined the site, and the mentioned voting bias is probably why I have had a harder time hitting 6's since it went away, even though my photography has been (IMO) improving. (5 1/2 is the new 6?)

Whatever the change in meaning, at least 5.5 is the actual middle of the full voting scale:

Some voters mistakenly think 5 is midpoint because it is 1/2 of 10, forgetting there is no zero score in the DPC scale.

No zero? No wonder the numbers don't work on DPC.
