This is flying all over the net, but I didn't see it posted here.

Canon is holding a press conference August 26th at which they're supposedly announcing new EOS dSLR products. Obviously speculation is high that this means a 5DMkII or a 50D, but I'll believe it when I see it. =D

...or perhaps just another crappy consumer-level camera with a different battery and storage card! =P

Last fall the announcement came just after midnight, so be prepared to stay up late on Monday. =) But don't be mad at me if nothing comes of it!

50D is rumoured to be released 26th August.

Bump for New Camera's Eve. =)

While hype about a product release is typically good, my feeling on the 5D Mk II is that Canon has shot themselves in the foot for the following reasons:

- Like Windows Vista, the 5D 2 will likely not be able to live up to its predecessor.
- Many people are not buying/upgrading their bodies now, waiting for this release.
- Many people are jaded against current releases - "I don't care about 50D / XS crap... show me the 5D 2!"
- Nikon has released the D700, which looks pretty darn tasty at this point.

Making people wait. Can you think of any other better marketing gimmick. Imagine the waiting list when you go to get one. Unless the upgrade turns out to be like the one going from the 20D to the 30D. Won't people be pissed. I doubt that though.

I've been waiting months now to upgrade my 30D to a 50D - can't wait for it to hit stores!

Canon Press Release

Sounds great, but not much to drive an upgrade for those with a 40D, unless they need the higher ISO. I take it that four user selectable levels of noise reduction must mean they have really stretched the limits of the sensor. Do you think it's all about releasing a camera with more megapixels? As an ex-cyclist, I'm a total gear geek, so I'm looking forward to sample images.

heh first the 18-200 and now it looks like they are trying to copy the D300 lol. Well good for them, it will only make Nikon stronger! ;)

I haven't seen a price listed yet for the 50D. Looks like it's listed at $1299.

The Canon 40D is still at $969 at B&H as of now. I think it was $899 a while back (maybe under Spring rebates).

Plus they still sell the 30D ($799). Surely the 30D will drop below the new consumer model prices... I guess we'll see.

PS: Thanks for the thread title change, SC. =)

Some of the more interesting looking features of the 50D:

- 640x480 3" LCD
- Two sizes of small RAW (7.1MP and 3.8MP)
- Dust data / deletion
- Per-lens vignetting correction (on a 1.6 crop?? =)
- Per-lens AF adjustment (correct back-focusing lenses?)
- boost ISO modes of 6400 and 12800
- 4-levels of high ISO noise reduction
- HDMI hi-def video output
- Enhanced live view and menus (courtesy Digic 4)
- Improved sensor (gapless microlenses) over 40D
- Better weather sealing

DPReview has their hands-on preview online now too. Makes me glad that I didn't buy that 40D a few weeks ago!

Nothing 'orgasmic' compared to the features of the 40D. Are we reaching a plateau for APS-C cameras?

I dunno - 50% more pixels, 2 extra stops of ISO, big bright LCD, and a new sensor technology (aka the promise of better noise performance) is certainly enough to warrant my interest.

ETA: On the first page of the DPReview preview, it compares the 40D and 50D, with almost all advantages to the 50D.

I doubt about the high ISO settings. The pixel density will change from 3.07 (40D) to 4.57 (50D) MP/cm^2. Things may get more complicated.

When I looked at the comparison table, the only major change remains the sensor. The race for MPs is no longer as interesting as that of the old days (2, 4 and 6 MP).

The 40D just came out last September, 2007. Is it normal to upgrade this line every year?

Doh, the answer is yes, according to the table on DPReview. :-O

We've seen the introduction of the 30D, the 40D and now the 50D and in that same time frame no replacement for the 5D.

The 5D was introduced in August 2005. The 30D was introduced in February 2006. C'mon Canon.

A new very interesting feature to note:

AF Microadjustment
The 50D now offers the AF microadjustment feature seen on high end EOS models. You can adjust all lenses by the same amount or up to 20 lenses individually (+/- 20 steps in each case).

To quote a reviewer (on the new 1DS having this feature)
"its purpose is to enable the end user to compensate for focus calibration errors in the body or combination of the body and attached lens."

The 40D made it hard to justify buying a 1D Mark III. The 50D only makes it harder.

I know it's not time for a refresh of the 1D series yet, but with this kind of steady update of the pro-sumer cameras, the pro cameras will need to keep up.

So glad i did'nt go with the 40d. MP count not really important for me but i do want improved ISO and a good LCD, 230px was'nt cutting it. Especially after using a friends d300, screen sooooo sharp. So now i'll definitely go for the 50. In another couple of months after the price comes down :)

I haven't been able to find a price for the 50D ... has anyone seen it posted someplace?
