Just to make sure I have this correct can someone please confirm if the image needs to be of a black and white subject or can the subject be of any colour but simply desaturated?

TIA for any help you can offer :)

Yes

if your asking if you CAN use desat then the answer is yes. Basic editing rules apply.

There are a zillion techniques for converting color images to b&w. I would suggest you research a a few (check the tutorials here and/or google) because simply desaturating usually makes the worst possible b&w conversion.

Yea what she said. You'd be better off to set your camera to B&W over desat.

Thanks all, I used the term "desaturated" on a whim, I don't normally use it for B&W conversions but it just came to my mind as a way to ask the question. But I think I understand now and an image of a red and blue obejct (for arguements sake) can be converted to b&w for the purposes of this challenge rather than needing a very specific b&w coloured subject matter (i.e chess board squares).

Oh but I'm sure we'll see those!

As well as black chess pieces dropping into milk. :)

Now you have told everyone my #1 and #2 ideas ;)

Back to the chalkboard then haha oops!

hahaha, it seems like oreos would be a more obvious subject over a black chess piece dropping into milk!

You're supposed to photograph your subject, not eat it! :P

I have some ideas for this one. I just hope people don't start arguing over what an abstract is to the point of what people are arguing over what a "Road Less Travelled" is. YIKES. That thread makes my brain whimper.

If you don't recognize it, then it's abstract. Seriously, I think of something being abstract when it's presented out of context, especially out of its identifying context.

Whatever that means.

That's why I asked. Earlier in the thread there was discussion about checkerboards, chess pieces in milk and Oreos....which made me worry that newbies might think this would be fitting of the challenge...when in fact, (unless done correctly....ie...unusual angles, closeups, etc), wouldn't be recognised as abstract. Therefore unnecessary DNMC votes for those that are led to thinking that those types of photos would be challenge-befitting!

There is probably a really obvious answer to this but what exactly qualifies as abstract.....? I mean, is there a technical definition, or is it just a picture that you don't quite recognise the subject. I'm a newbie if you couldn't tell.

Just curious... Abstract or not? I'm thinking not, but I'm curious how others define abstract.

I would say YES..but what do I know!! I bet this is good for a $1000000 if you put it infront of the right person...but on DPC it would probably get you a 3 and a Brown.
