I was wondering if someone with a 5D knows the actual sync speed - rather then the advertised/limited 1/200 (could not find much in google with all the irrelevant stuff). You obviously cannot go over 1/200 with a canon flash on the hotshoe unless you do the HSS (I'm not talking about that) or tape over the contacts. You need to do it off camera or thru the pc port.

On my 20D I can do 1/320 no issue (advertised at 1/250) and only get a small bar @ 1/400 and @1/4 bar on 1/500 and 1/2 @ 1/640. I am looking to upgrade to a 5D once the new one is announced (the old model should drop in price a bit) but wanted to see what the max sync sans Canon limits really is.

Not sure what you mean or if this is applicable, but 1/200s is it regardless of using my 430ex or external strobes. Anything faster I get the black bar. Even over the smallest part of the image its not acceptable, so at 1/200s I stay.

The sync speed of a camera is the max shutter speed where the entire sensor is uncovered all at one time. If the shutter speed is faster than the sync speed, the entire sensor is not uncovered all at one time because the second curtain will begin to close before the first curtain has completely opened. The reason for this is so that the flash can evenly expose the entire scene in one burst before the second curtain begins to close.

I'm not sure that the 5D can do more than it's advertised speed and I wasn't even aware that the 20D could do more than it's advertised speed...

Yeah... I know the deal with the advertised sync but as I mention, the 20D is limited to 1/250 even though in reality I don't get any bar at 320 and only a small portion for 1-ish more stops. I have been playing with manual flash against sun type of deal (al la strobist) so faster is better and besides the black bar is only an issue when it's not cropped out or hidden with light or shadow in the final image :-) Thx... I was hoping the 5D had a bit of safety but sounds like it's right on the 1/200 it's limited to :-( Seriously considering picking up an old 1D to get that electronic shutter on a Canon :-/

Just curious, what don't you like about the HSS. I find it quite useful.

It is useful and it's always enabled on my main flash when I use in on camera but only works with new expen$ive Canon (or compat) flashes...... besides you lose power like it going out of fashion due to the pulsing to cover the travel of the 2 curtains.

I have been using a few older cheap flashes in manual mode because I want them off the camera (using radio triggers, cables & optical triggers in various combo's) and I don't have the dosh for a few EX based flashes (and not sure I would go this way if I did... although I will pick up another EX flash and have a play in the future). I also like the control and as a learning exercise it's just great - honestly try it cause it makes you think & understand what is happening - I think about lighting a bit now eve4n when there is no flash on the camera. The reason for the faster sync is for outside to push the background darker while hitting the foreground with strobe (inside, it's easy to stay under the sync).
