Quote from DPReview's D70 Review.

"Nikon have achieved three major improvements with the D70 (compared to the competition / the D100): (1) They have improved the performance of the camera, with its instant on availability, very fast shutter release, superb continuous shooting and image processing speed and smart use of its buffer. (2) They have maintained build quality while still delivering a smaller and lighter camera, the D70 doesn't feel much less well built than the D100 but is lighter, it certainly feels much more like $1000 worth of camera than the EOS 300D could. (3) They have improved image sharpness and detail, while we could niggle about moiré the compromise between artifacts and sharpness is worth it, in many instances the D70 delivering more detail than our previous benchmark, the EOS 300D / EOS 10D CMOS sensor.

There's not much more for me to add other than I am very pleased to see Nikon stepping up with a quality camera which doesn't compromise on build quality, feature set or image quality and yet offers superb value for money. There's no risk involved in the D70's slightly higher price compared to the EOS 300D (Digital Rebel), it's absolutely worth it."

Just an FYI that there's more than just a Canon dRebel out there if you're looking to get into the Digital SLR market :-)

So far....I sure like mine.

Was surprised to have the Camera store staff, actually recommend it over the 100. Was not sure initially, that I wanted to wait....and certainly thought that a price break might be coming on the 100's. However, Morgan from Toronto and and a couple of others that I PM'd here at dpc, recommended the 70. Good advice. Glad I listened this time.

So far, I love mine. I've had a couple initial growing pains with customizing tone curves and white balance settings, but the camera offers a very respectable amount of setting customization. So if you're willing to invest some initial time to experiment and test, you'll start to get exactly the response you want from it.

I'm going to go read the review now to see what insights Phil has on my new best friend.

I have mine for about two weeks now ... been shooting like crazy. It really feels good in my hands handling it, it is fast, no lag time between shots and can shoot many (hundreds they say) in succession or burst. So it is really perfect for me because I like to shoot while inside a moving car most of the time.

In addition, the first picture I submitted with the D70 in DPC received 26 tens and 22 nines (!), unthinkable for me, and ended up in the top ten. Before that, most of my shots were languishing in the bottom 50%, although I had ribboned once a long time ago, but I thought that was a fluke. I'm sure I would do ok too with a Canon Rebel but the D70 just felt good in my hand compared to the Canon. And I never owned an SLR before.

Nikon D 70 + 70-200 F2.8 VR lense $2452.
Canon 300D + 70-200 F 2.8 IS lense $2555.

Looks like Nikon is a better deal here!

Nikon D70 would have been very tough choice to turn down. My last choices were between the Fuji S2 and Olympus E-1. The Olympus won on price (!) and handling. The 14-54mm lens is just amazing. Olympus must be selling this at a loss.
