It is headline news over here and has been for several days.

Not here in the US. Just a blurb on the nightly news.
I think this is a big deal. Every major world war has started with a government trying to overrun a smaller country along it's borders. And everytime, the world sits back and does nothing until they HAVE TO.

Its huge news here in the UK - it has been occupying 60% of the news programmes, television and radio.

It's probably not as big news here (Australia) as it would be in Europe, but it's certainly getting coverage.

At risk of being cynical 1: timing it to coincide with the Olympics probably reduces the coverage.

At risk of being cynical 2: I vaguely remember a comment from around the time of the Atlanta Olympics explaining why most "world" news in the US is still about the US... Atlantans think New Yorkers are from a foreign country.

I assume a lot of people in Atlanta are getting their guns ready. The news is full of the Russians making a push for the capital of Georgia. It's bound to be making people nervous.

It's pretty big news here, but it's overshadowed by the olympics. Probably as inteneded by Russia.

In accordance with UN resolutions, Russia had 500 peacekeapers in South Ossetia, because the dispute about the borders and Georgian control over this region has been going on for years. It was Georgia who on the 5th of august did a fierce surprise attack on the capital city of this region, including the Russian troops. This attack was pretty heavy, including civilians and hospitals (as the Red Cross reported). After that Russia attacked and Georgia started to scream that the Russians started.

Both sides are wrong here. The leaders on both sides are undemocratic lunatics, this not about what people want, this is about what the leaders want. The leader of south Ossetia is a maffioso and the leader of Georgia won the "democractic" elections by fraude. Nobody wins, only the US (delivering to Georgia) and the Russian weapon industries.

If you delve back into the histories of the tribes who form regions and countries there, you would understand that most borders there are not representative of reality.

I heard nobody complain much when Turkey went into Iraq to go after the Kurd tribes, nobody complains about people wanting to split up in Yugoslavia. Nobody complained when NATO and America bombed Serbia when they wanted to stop regions seperating from Serbia. And it is completely normal that Kosovo wants to seperate from Serbia because it is anti-Serbia, but not normal that Macedonia wants to seperate because it doesn't suit NATO ally Greece (Macedonia is part Greece and part Serbia, and everyone fears they want to unite).

In this situation nothing is black and white. Don't get fooled by PR mumbo jumbo from all sides.

I'll admit that I'm relatively ignorant of the 'why' of this but it seems clear that Russia stated it was going to pull back and apparently are not. If they feel justified in doing what they have done why did they not just state that, make their case and refuse to leave? Why the subterfuge of saying one thing and doing another?

Russia has an interest in retaining control in Georgia. Russia has an interest in maintaining relations with the West. Russia has an interest in being seen to comply with international law. Russia has an interest in dominating the nearby ex-soviet states. Russia has an interest in maximising trade with the nearby ex-soviet states. etc etc etc

Russia has an awful lot of competing interests. What you are seeing is political strategy attempting to balance and maximise the benefits to be gained.

Once again, welcome to the real world in all its messy glory - far from the black and white, "with us or against us", simplistic, abstracted, news-bite, inanity of the modern, politically manipulated and manipulative media story.
