I'm suggesting adding a statistic right under the ribbons on the user's profile that counts how many times the user has finished in the top ten:

Top Ten Placement: X Times

Getting a ribbon is an accomplishment, so is finishing in the top ten.

I'll second that
04/04/2004 07:29:58 PM · #3
Why not a graph of the number of each person's finishes by percentile? Many users are doing this for themselves already, and the raw data is already displayed on that page.

i'll second both.

I vote yes for both, if anyone's asking or counting...

I don't think it is so much up to how we "vote" on it. It is up to the imfamous 'todo' list. :)
04/04/2004 10:04:02 PM · #7
I'll also second both

Yeah, but it's fun to vote, it makes me feel like my voice is somewhat important.

Mark my vote for both!

True, and the more an opinion is declared, the higher the priority of creating it might be.

To take this a step further, and build off another thread, perhaps we could create an "Elite Challenge" where only those who's scored within the top ten in a previous challenge could enter.

This would create a new challenge that could have several entries, but not the overwhelming numbers the opens are getting.

Note: I have no top ten entries, but I hope to some day.

mark my vote of yes to all 3 ideas
04/05/2004 02:11:42 AM · #12
all three sound good to me!

the elite idea is cool because it is yet another incentive to strive for a high score on this site, and it will make for some very nice photos to browse through and vote on - filtering out the noise so to speak.

hey, i've yet to get better than 30th, so its not like i consider myself one of the elite. if anything, i'm part of the noise, but i'm still trying to strike a chord...

it should be top 10 percent instead of top 10.

A top 10 with 80 submissions is a lot different than a top 10 with 380 submissions.

yeah i think that would be fun... yes to all three

i haven't gotten any in the top 10 either... or top 10% for that matter.. but i think that would be a fun think to work towards... before finally making it to a ribbon

The top 10% with 80 submissions is also a lot different than the top 10% with 380 submissions.

I think these are great ideas!
But I don't agree with the top 10%. It should be
top 10 places only. IMO

I like the initial thought of "top ten placement X times", but I'm not so sure that the others are such a good idea - not just because *I* haven't reached that exalted status but because that will lead to more of an elitist thought process. We already have a number of members who are pretty well known for being high scorers - and that's great - but do you really want to see this go to a "class" system site where there is more of an "us versus them" mentality rather than an atmosphere that promotes learning and teaching to become better photographers? JMO - I have a great deal of respect for those who consistently present great photographs each week - and I strive for that as well and can see improvements in my own photography whether or not the voting actually shows it. But, afterall, the art of photography is just as subjective as any other art - tastes differ - and human nature being what it is, I think that you'd see even more disagreements and "hurt feelings" showing up in the forums than you currently see.

That's an astute observation kaycee, to pick up on the possible emergence of "an elitist thought process". I have noticed a few remarks recently about some people deciding not to participate in and/or vote/comment on the Open Challenges due to a perceived increase in the number of entries and decrease in the quality of pictures there. Your terminology seems to have hit on something I was having a hard time finding the right words for. I hope I have understood your intent correctly.

Im in for the percent. In the textures challenge, 4xx entries, and i got 17. 96% top 17.
04/05/2004 11:37:35 AM · #20
What could be really nice is a full photographers ranking. I explain myself : Every photographer would be ranked with the overall average quote of all his submissions. We could then see each one ranking by percent, quote, nbr of ribbons won, etc...

What d'you think about it ?

Sure. Have a class for the best photographers. And then don't allow them to enter open challenges! This does several things - keeps the open challenges more competetive for newcomers, less 'cherry picking' for the 'experts', reduces the entries in open challenges, encourages the better photographers to become members (as they can no longer enter the open challenges).

But then you run into the problem of some of the "experts" who are paid members, being denied participation in part of the site. Though I doubt I'd qualify as an "expect", I'd be chapped if I weren't allowed to enter the open challenges.

What the average score has to do with how good the photographer is?
Who is giving the scores? Most of us here are general public who just bought cameras and having fun !Maybe a few dozen real artists participate in voting here.

A person doesn't become a good photographer by just spending 6000$ on Canon 1D and snapping shots!

I voted yes for the first two "Statistics", but I am personally against any elite vote or other such class system. All that does is make members or registered users feel excluded.

Lot of people vote late at night and next day they change the scores because they see better now ! Some vote drunk and the sharp photos look blurred and the nasty ones are just right!

let me tell you a story:

I was at the dance club late at night (early morning) and had over 10 differnt drinks allready !A Lady come close to me and ask me to shake butty with her.She looked so beautiful,(i give 9 for composition and 10 for DOF)We holded hands and stepped at the dance floor !
Next morning I wake up in the room at Motel 6 and look arround ,then I noticed this "thing " next to me!
She smiled without opening her mouth!?
"Who are you?" I asked.
"Don't remember? we had so much fun last night!" she said.
"How old are you?" I asked the lady.
"What do you think?" She touches her hair with a smile.
"I don't think a woman can live that long!" I replied.

Than I change my scores to 2 and 1.
