Yes...this is a real croc. No crop. Very little editing. I apologise if the bottom jaw is not in focus...she wouldn't listen to my directions very well. Yes I was down on the ground a few meters from her while her male was even closer to me. I love getting in with the crocs.

Alternate edit with the "more dramatic sky":

After viewing and voting the challenge, and leaving over 150 comments, I concluded a) I should have used the "more dramatic sky" edit, and b) it just doesn't have enough "punch" for a FS. I am, however, rather proud of the editing on this one.

Wow, Alain - awesome decision! You had plenty of great options for this month! (I suspect you do every month!)

Peter, I love the warmth of those shots - lovely day for shooting there and you did a great job of it!

Your entry is a great study in photograpy. Enticing, with a touch of mystery, that needs some time to savor. It's the kind of shot that could go on display at an exhibit. The time factor is the problem with it as far as a challenge entry is concerned IMO. For scoring, the two deer shots probably would have scored higher.

Tough choice for sure.

My turn. :-)

I like the photo I entered, and honestly, I was a little disappointed in the score. Guess I should have known better having kids and a pet (although I have no idea who the dog belongs to) in the same scene. :-P The thing I liked about this for a challenge entry was the energy and life the kids and dog brought to an otherwise static landscape shot. The placement also seemed ok IMO with primary subjects on the ROT points. Oh well...it's a keeper (print made) for us otherwise.

Entry -

Outtakes (never really considered any of these - worked them up for fun and stock. The bridge entrance is a PP goofing around workup for the family album).

Any feedback is certainly appreciated. :-D

My Entry

Finished %15 and 4.9, a little disappointed, but I am always too much of an optimist :) I think it is darker on my monitor (need to get calibrrated!) and therefore too light for most voters. Comments always appreciated. I got two comments that disliked the sky, which I thought was very cool. This again could be my monitor showing the brightness wrong.

Outtakes (submission and outtakes all from a week's vacation in Yarmouth, MA, USA on Cape Cod)

Entry which didn't do as well as I had hoped (I was hoping for at least a 6):

I agree - this one has a bit of something personal and touching that your entry did not (especially as it relates to the DPC crowd). I actually liked your entry and think the sky is fantastic and the details in the grass are well captured, but I wonder if it suffers from the relative small scale of 720 versus a large print on a wall.

Thanks guys, that was probably my last choice. I have such a hard time deciding on what to enter.

I like this outtake, maybe as much as your entry. Hmmm. The one you entered may have popped a tad more with a deeper aperture, say f22, to get a starburst going on the lights.

Seeing your boat shot reminded me that I had one I probably should have considered as well...taken around the same time as my others while on vacation.

I had TONS of outtakes. These guys were fun to shoot!

Entry:

I was feeding them earthworms earlier this week for the Morning challenge ("early bird"), but it turns out they close their eyes when they eat and really mangle the worms, so it wouldn't have been much of an entry and I gave up. The next night, I had an owl right outside my office looking at me and yelling for room service. :-/
