My baby brother turns 18 in November and I would really like to get him a point and shoot camera.

He takes snaps on his camera phone and often says how good it would be to have a 'proper' camera so he could actually print some of his photos and stuff. So, I'm hoping with your help I'll be able to find him the perfect one!

Basically the only thing I am sure about is I would like it to be fairly slimline so he can put it in his pocket (meaning he'll take it out with him more often!) other than that I'm happy to be led by you guys! :o) Oh and I suppose I should say a maximum price of £250!

Your thoughts?

There are always trade-offs... I don't know that a "perfect" camera exists (even in the DSLR world), but this is the one I bought my daughter for Christmas last year. I believe there are newer versions of this camera available, with correspondingly higher prices. But the cost on this one is low and the form factor means it can literally be carried everywhere.

I agree...the Canon...no matter what you choose is a great p & s camera. I just bought my 18 year old son a camera...not a Canon as he looses everything and i mean everything, so I want to see how he does first with a less expensive camera. He was very clear however that he really wanted the smaller size camera that he could put in his pocket which the Canon Elph SD versions offers in a great camera. 18 year old want small and portable. He also wanted the movie feature on it so he could take clips with his friends and download on facebook as he is going away to College and hopes to keep connected with his friends. He really didn't care about manual settings, but loves the instant scene settings for night, etc. I bought my son the Fuji Finepix because it is small, comes in funky colours and is 10 mp. It has face detection and image stabalization and was under $200 in Canada. It's not a Canon...I want to be clear...he loves it, but i see the difference from my Canon p & s. I have the Canon A640 along with my SLR. The A series is fantasitic but bigger than most 18 year olds want. I think the SD series in the Canon is a great choice.

The Canon Powershot A720 would be a good choice. The Nikon Coolpix L series are a bit slimmer and fit in a pocket better, though they don't have manual control, just some scene modes.

The casio s600, if you can still find it, is an excellent camera for beginners, ultra slim, big screen, and won't cost you more than £100. I bought as a present and it was spot on.

If you are going to go for a Canon - don't forget the Canon Outlet website.

There re always buckets of P&S's on there and a whole pile cheaper than normal.

Hi Talj

Canon G7 are in that bracket now, even the G9 is only £285 ... any one of these cameras are FANTASTIC! really good quality images and video mode too.

Happy shopping.

I have been told the G9 is in the process of being replaced with a new model. I have in the past week bought a G9 and it is quite possibly the best P&S on the market. Its very easy to use, but can also go full manual. Has some great Noise control for a P&S as well. Does some neat time lapse stuff as well.

A few samples.

ETA I picked this up last week with an extra battery, camera with 50 shots, and the filter adapter, had all the original software and everything still in the original box unopened for $420 USD. A good deal can be had right now as the speculation is its being replaced by a new model.
