That's about 300 dollars less than BH (body only) so I'd say heck yeah that's a good price :)

The camera that you are using at the time to take the pictures :-)

My personal opinion is that it is the Canon Digital Rebel because of shear image quality and being an SLR. However, it is very subjective. It completely dependent on what your needs are. Many of the fixed-lense designs are fantastic. I still greatly enjoy using my F707 but it is limiting in regards to lenses, shooting speed, and image quality at larger sizes.

What you really need to do is make a list of the features you want based on your shooting style and then compare the models that have these features. DPreview and Steve's Digicams are goods sources for reviews as well as downloadable sample photos for your own inspection. Happy shopping.

If you can get a didgital Rebel for 600 take it. That's the best deal on a camera I have ever heard of. If it's used, make sure it still works right, and to get lenses.

is it a bait/switch site? look up the store at resellerratings.com before buying from them.

I recently picked up a Nikon d70. I have been completely happy with it. On the dpreview d70 forums, there has been some concern about color shifting and moire, but I have not found these problems to be present. Many of the "problems" brought up on the dpreview forums have come from users not knowing how to properly use the camera (i.e. having noise reduction on and complaining that it takes a long time after the picture has taken before they can take another picture (the nikon noise reduction takes a dark frame of equal exposure length after the initial picture)) The options on this camera are very impressive and I have been very impressed. The body is $999, if you get the lens kit (18-70 f/3.5-4.5 (equivilant to 27-105mm) it is $1299.

yes any of the EF lenses work, that is to say any lens produced in the last, about ten years ,is it? One thing to think about is because of the crop factor some lenses that are not well rated due to poor edge focus work well on a less than full frame sensor because the flaws are outside the sensor area. I have seen some very cool fisheye images withthis camera.

where do you see this 600 dollar rebel?
04/03/2004 05:44:57 PM · #20
Its an interesting question - probably something like the Canon Pro 1 or something. The Rebel isn't really a sub $1000 camera though - you can get the body and the kit lens for that - but then you really start spending...

Once again I agree with Gordon. A Digital SLR.....BEGINS at under $1000. If you are building a serious system.....and you will want to if you catch the "fever", then plan on another 2-3,000 AFTER the body purchase. Lenses, flash, filters, batteries, media cards, storage device, carry all case, tri-pod, mono-pod, heads, QR plates and so on.

The only difference in costs with a non-slr is the savings in muliple lenses. It is really worth weighing all the periferals, both in weight and cost. Choose wisely. There a couple of options in 5-8mp range with 10x zooms.

It is. AMPhotoworld is one of the worst-rated retailers on the planet. They have a lifetime rating of .65 (out of 10) in a field where the average rating is over 8. The reason this price is so low is that they're selling you JUST the camera- no battery, software, manual or anything else you'd normally get in the box. You won't even get the Canon warranty. They will then try to sell you each piece as an 'accessory' as an inflated price. Consider yourself warned.

Price on the 300D looks really good, prolly too good. The accessories are WAY overpriced. I bet they try to pressure you into buying a bunch of overpriced stuff, otherwise your camera will be "out of stock".

I'd check them out thoroughly before I ordered.

Good luck.
