The images in the March Free Study Challenge are a feast for the eyes. Thanks to all for your wonderful images.

Maybe it is the combination of free study, advanced editing rules and more time but it seems to breed the very best photography.

And I might add it is a joy to evaluate images based on their photographic merit only without the subjective restriction that it "meet the challenge".

I just want to add my voice to what Imagineer already suggested. There should be a free study every month:

i like the openess of it, and having a bit more time to take a shot.
not that i dont take a lot - but i dont always have time to go though them, and tune them up.

i would vote yes ( or at least bi-monthly )

As per my post in the last thread on this, I am fully in support of this.
It's so much fun to shoot all month and at the end of the month ask "what's the best work I've done?" without regard to subject matter.
I still like the subject-specific challenges, they do force me to think about working outside my comfort zone, but the free studies are great.
And I agree, the quality is amazing in the current one! Just my luck, as I'm bound for probably my highest score ever, and wondering if it will be good enough to ribbon, LOL.

My vote too. While there's certainly some fun in thinking up how to meet the specific challenges, sometimes they are a bit too arcane, and it's too hard to think of an artistic way to meet the challenge (it's easy to take a picture that meets the challenge, but it's hard to take one that could potentially be hanging on a gallery or even someone's wall.)

I like the anonymous rating system here and I'm sure I would participate even more if there were more free challenges.

I put my vote in this too. I think admins had planned one for every season, there whas one in december (winter) now one in march (spring) I think there will probably be one in august or so for summer. I wish for one every month but working in the field I also understand they are probably concerned about the amount of space/traffic it takes so I say if not every month but I would like another soon.

I put another vote, too. The quality of monthly free study challenge is awesome... I think it could be free study or a theme monthly challenge.. It would be great!

It's once a quarter, or every 3 months i think. The next one would be expected to be in August. Well i vote YES too...hopefully some nice Admins are looking at this thread : )

Actually, it would be June. :)

My only "problem" was having to go through 2000+ pictures in search of worthy possibilities. Then was actually deciding which of the couple dozen "finalists" to submit. Then the frustration of picking the wrong one. :(

But seriously, it would be nice to know that when you get one of those "perfect" shots, there would always be a monthly challenge you could use it for.

I vote yes too !! It beats having a "does not meet challenge" message ;)

Got my vote too!

It is certainly refreshing to see what people have been doing over the month and I don't think that having one monthly would ruin anything at all. It's just real nice to kind of kick back and have some time to take shots.

great idea also what about "your best photo of 2003"?
04/03/2004 01:27:23 PM · #19

1. Too many images to vote/comment on -- the "regular" challenge entries get ignored.
2. Undermines the basic concept of DP Challenge -- it just becomea a "photo-of-the-month" club.
3. Doesn't leave much room for Speed Challenges -- there's already too much to keep track of.
4. Having one every month will take away the "specialness" and enjoyment which is now a big part of the experience.
5. More DQ requests to deal with.

I agree one a season (4 a year) are enough of them.

I can see the points made for fewer open challenges, but if they are only every 3 months, then the challenge submission period should be--drum roll--three months.

What's the downside to having photos that can be submitted that were taken any time since the last open challenge? We are all (or most)( part-time photographers. Why can't we share our best photo since the last challenge?

They may get ignored for a day or so when the Free Study opens, but I don't theink overall there will be many less votes on challenges. In the end, the way to get more voting is to have more active members, and the way to achieve that is to add desired features. This one has nearly universal support, judging by the previous posts in this and the last thread. I say let's poll!

"Undermine" implies that implementing this would somehow lessen the value of the subject specific challenges. I see them as two very different and separate things. If anything, since the quality of submissions is higher, it provides an additional learning experience which will help to raise the bar in other challenges. In summary, diversification is good.

Yes, but with a steadily growing user base we need to provide additional outlets, again diversify, if we are gong to grow to the next level. Change is good.

[strike]But I like instant gratification![strike]
For me the enjoyment of the free studies is knowing that when I get a great shot I can share it with this community. I don't see haveing one every month as diminshing this experience.

Maybe a few, but in Advanced Editing, what's to DQ for? Date violations? there might be a few, but if Free Studies are every month, what would drive someone to submit an out-of-date pic? Whenever it is taken, there's a Free Study it will legally fit into.

Neil, see numbers 2 & 4 above, LOL.

Everyone should keep in mind that a part of the reason we get the impression of better quality photos in the Free Studies is that we have excluded the group of less experienced photographers known as Registered Users.

IMO, the quality of the Free Studies is significantly higher than the weekly Members' Challenges, which also exclude registered users.
the reasons for this are:

1.) It's a free study, any subject goes. Folks submit what they do best.

2.) Longer timeframe. More work to choose from, better quality.

We talked alot last year about how to continue to stimulate & engage the best photogs on the site; this is one way of doing so. Since it's a free study, there's no additional onus on the Admins to come up with topics. It is very competitive, with larger pools of submissions and higher quality of submissions.

I've seen the argument that this becomes just another site like the rest. Consider the converse: when I cannot participate in a challenge because the topic is arcane, unavailable to me, or just not something I think I can lend an artistic interpretation to, I just go back to those other photo sites (I belong to several, but I prefer to spend my time here--not because of the topical challenges, but because this is one of the few sites where you can truly get a large number of anonymous (and thus "real") ratings.

So when we find we have "nothing to share" on DPC, which has happened for periods of weeks at a time for me in my short, 6 months of membership, the site is actually "putting some distance" between us.

That may not seem a problem at first, but realize we all have limited amounts of time. If someone find themselves enjoying and being able to participate on another site more, of course, DPC will become less important to them and they will spend little time here, and their membership will lapse. I don't think that's what the sysops really want. It's a great community. I think we all benefit when the members spend their time and energy here, not elsewhere.
