I am in the process of buying the Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM lens. I have read somewhere that this lens isn't intended for a small frame camera such as my little Rebel XT. Does this mean that this is too much of a lens for the XT and it wont be able to take full advantage of it?

edit: sorry, I have the XT, not the XTI

no, it'll work just fine

The only time you'll ever "run into trouble" with canon lenses on entry level DSLR's is when using a lens with an aperture of say f1.2. The focusing system may not be accurate enough to lock on correctly.

... and even that's doubtful in my opinion

It'll work great. The one thing to remember though is do not mount the camera body to the tripod with this lens attached. Use the included tripod ring to mount the lens to the tripod and then the body to the lens. Otherwise you could have the tripod topple over and/or break/bend something in the lens mount of the body.

thanks guys, just making sure, this lens cost a heap and I wouldn't want to be disappointed! Still on then.

Yup it works just fine. It's my next purchase. Then the 24-70 2.8L followed by the 10-22 and you can cover quite the range!

of course, you'll need a 23mm prime

:)

I have used that lens on a 350D, 40D, and 5D and it's awesome on all of them.

Certainly not had any problems using on the 350D

In fact that reminded me that I entered a challenge with a shot of the 70-200 mounted to a 350D!

Is there a canon 23mm prime?

No but even if there was, it would probably cost an arm and a leg to get it. Might as well take a few steps forward and be done with it. :) You can always get a nice 17-40 or 16-35 to fill in that gap though if you've got some cash burning a hole in your pocket.

So I caved and bought the 70-200mm f2.8L IS from my local Seneal Camera shop. It could have been about $160 bucks cheaper on Ebay, but I'm leaving on a vacation next week and well, I just needed it...

First impression = wow. I can't believe the speed of this lens.
It is a bit on the heavy side, but I found that I entirely forget this "in the heat of the moment" LOL.

More pics coming soon. For now, just a few from my local pond...
