If you just purchased a Nikon D70 are you still happy with your purchase? I read the forum talk on dpreview and I can't tell much about the moire problem. Is it a problem for you? Is it worth about 300 more than the Rebel? Does the speed make that much difference? It is time for me to buy and I hate making decision! Let me know what you think.

I am completely happy with my D70. I got the kit with the 18-70mm lens and have no regrets. You might pay a little more for the D70, but from what I've seen and read, the feature sets are no where near equal.

Wildflower Joy,

Been talking to alot of "experienced" folks. All, without exception, are recommending the D70 over the D100. I pick mine up, Thursday night.

Good Luck,

*incredibly fast nod that causes my brain to rattle around*

i'm gonna start a thread about my trip last weekend, but here's a sneak preview of some of my shots from the nasdaq-100 open (tennis). i put that thing to the test and it performed flawlessly....

It looks great, except it seems to make women look very masculine.
I really like the first B&W Capriati shot - most excellent.

just from looking at the two I get a better feeling for the D70.
If I was choosing between the two I would jump for the Nikon.......

I can see the Canon team blasting at me already for saying that;)

My scores suddenly shot up with my first D70 submission (it might even ribbon) ... coincidence? I think not.

Just bought it last week. I had a problem with dead or hot pixels (specks of dirt showing on blurry pictures) but the dealer promptly exchanged it for a new one (!), no questions asked. Been shooting like crazy because it is incredibly fast. Practically no lag time between shoots and it turns on instantaneously. So if you see something that you think is worth shooting, it's ready for you.

Steep learning curve for me because this is my first SRL but it's been fun so far. I haven't encountered problems that I had with my Olympus (slow lag time, purple fringing, noise in low light and in zoom). The moire problem apparently shows up when you're shooting in extreme light conditions that you'd probably not encounter at all.

Then change your camera on your profile and show that you've joined the club.

I'm very, very happy with my little angel. She's everything I had hoped for and more.

A good friend of mine just got a D70. We shot a series of shots comparing the D100 with the D70. The D70 was slightly more saturated in color, but not over-saturated. I was impressed.

As with the D100, I think an external flash will be required to really light an indoor subject. I use the SB-80 with the D100, but the new SB-800 was made for the D70.

Great camera!!!

I got a D70 last week, I am pleased with picture quality. I feel much more comfortable with the control layout and the user interface in less than a week of use than I ever did with my Sony DSC-75.This is the area that I think will help me to use more of the features of the camera and "capture the vision" that my eye and mind see. I have only used the kit lense so far, I am looking forward to some urban trekking with my 50mm Nikkor- I wish I could sneak my longer Nikkors into the BOB DYLAN show this weekat AMU in D.C.!

how does the noise compare to the canon CMOS sensors?
04/02/2004 09:07:50 AM · #16
Just got mine last night. (not the kit, just the body)

The feel and handling are superb. I'm disapointed that my film camera flash unit will not work. Was not planning on the funds for another hot shoe flash. My older (D) Nikkors work on the D70, but with the quality level of this camera and a couple of upcoming trips, I decided to pick up a couple new lenses. The new lenses are vastly superior to anything I've shot before and due to the newer electronics, they will only focus in manual on my older 6006.

Pros are the "feel" and natural hold that this camera has. Cons are the requirement for a new flash unit, and the fact that the newer lenses only autofocus on the D70.

Currently in "reading" mode. Will get to shoot it later.

many of the shots in my post above (from the tennis tournament) were taken at ISO 1600. the noise is detectable when compared to ISO 200, but stellar as far as i'm concerned.

i don't have any Canon shots to compare it to, however.

I'm not sure what this means, exactly, as I'm a nooB. BUT I used a new-ish 70-300 and the kit lens, and when I flip the switch on the left of the lens mount to "M", i could use manual focus with both.

I'm just curious b/c I've seen others mention things about the autofocus, but I've done plenty of my own. Maybe I'm just breaking something.

Muckpond,

All of my lenses AF on the D70. Older "D" lenses and my 2 new ones. The difference is that my 2 new ones will not AF (auto-focus) on my older 6006 film body as the electronics do not support some of the functions of the newer style lenses. I can manually focus the new lenses on the older film camera, just no AF function. It was my hope that ALL my gear could work seamlessly intermixed, sadly, that is not the case.

However, my "gear" has just transcended from amature/serious student, to pro grade. Now I just have to step up to the plate and do my part.

With the increased use of electronics in cameras, Canon engineers has the foresight to see that lens compatability was going to be an issue in the future, and is one of the primary reasons Canon abandoned their FD lens mount in 1987 and released the completely-electronic EF lens mount. Since that time, every lens and body Canon has released (with the exception of the EF-S kit lens that is available with the Digital Rebel and not available for retail purchase) has been interchangeable with each other with full functionality, whether film or digital, consumer or pro. At the same time, Canon increased the diameter of their lens mount, creating the largest clear aperture (54mm internal diameter) of any lens system used with a 35mm SLR camera.

At that time, it really upset a lot of Canon shooters, especially pro photographers who had a lot of FD glass. But looking back in hindsight, must agree that it was an excellent decision on their part.

I am very happy with my 3 week old D70. Why not? I got my firts ribbon in DPC because of it. Here's the picture:

The colors are wonderful. Will soon download some pictures in my portfolio to show the amazing images my D70 did.

Thats a great shot and you even managed to find a secret hack to get ISO 100 on your D70.
You Wish :)

Ooppss..sorry. Disregard the technicalities. I did not eneter the right data because I was rushing to submit the picture. I didn't go back to check/correct it.

There's a lot of talk about the D70 lacking ISO100. Ok, so I'm new to this kind of photography, but I'm amazed at what the D70 does at any ISO. As a "proof of concept" I wanted to take a couple of pictures at 1600 to see what I could get out of it. A few hours in the kitchen and in front of PhotoShop I managed to produce the following:

Ok, so PhotoShop has improved them a bit from out of the camera, but this is digital photography right? Comments are welcome. Please don't hit me too hard, I only got the camera a couple of days ago :-)
