My entry for orange. Technically a nice stock studio shot... but I guess didn't capture the feel of the challenge. Proof that not all well executed shots win, sometimes you have to have that 'magic'

I thought that this was a fabulous shot and that it deserved to score far higher than it did. There you go.

Danny, I know what you mean. I thought mine was going to do better too. I guess I didn't have enough orange. Van

I gave you a "10" on this one. I think I gave bonus points for the sugar content :P. On the top 3 I only gave 1 "10".

Wow! Thanks :-D

Well, don't feel so bad. I thought I met the challenge wonderfully, but didn't have a technically great shot, and I did worse than you. I thought everyone loved peeps and thought I'd get extra points for that!

The whole 'theme' of the shot is yellow though - even though it has a few orange bits in it. Doubt that helped...

Technically photo is good, but subject is not defined, there are many subjects there and there is no wow light effect !5.6 is fair score imo!

I only gave 1 10, & that was to the winning image. I did rank yours a 9. I thought you did an excellent job, but just missed the mega wow factor.

I chose to go with the definition of Orange. 5.8 is good, i'm happy with the photo.

Danny, it's good but there's just one problem... it's more yellow then orange and that's why it didn't do as well as you thought it would. If you notice, the winning shots all had a STRONG orange color to them. So voters gave this aspect a lot of weight when voting. I try to study the winning pics each week to try to find out a common "winning element", but so far it hasn't helped me. :D

I bet if you tweaked the color balance on your shot to make it orange, it would have given the final score of your shot a full point increase because it's already good. Just needed more orange.

Thanks for all the insight. After my March Free Study, I'll be on DPC vacation for a while. Think I need to charge the old photography juices going out doing more shooting for myself. I'll keep an eye out here, but probably won't be submitting anything for a while. Heck, if it worked for Kiwi, it's gotta work for me too :-)

Deserved more, was my only 10. (but I only voted 30% of the shots).

Well, I have just woken to discover I came 213th with my study of the toilet duck. Not bad, considering. I must ask though, if I had titled it Duck A L'Orange, (wife came up with the new name day after submission, grrr!)would it have done any better?

It is nice, my only beef with it is that it is quite busy ... my eyes can't decide what to feast on first :-(. Balance is in harmony though.

I am very disappointed that this didn't do well. I thought it was brilliant ... simple, stark, powerful. I mean, it is quite difficult to come up with this because it is common ...

crabappl3, that was one of my top picks also.
You beat me by 1 place!!!
@Stevens, "What on earth is a peeps?". Sory I only gave you a 5 as I thought it looked like something that belongs in a toilet ;-) Guess you have to be in the know!

Studio type set-ups have got to have something special in them for me,and I thought this had.. with good composition and lighting(I scored it 8)and I fully expected to see it in the top ten.
Judging by the comments Danny, it appears that there was a bit too much yellow in the image for some.

I really don't think you need proof. It's not just technical ability that win. Many people on here are good with the technical stuff.

It's the idea that's important..

9 comments, all very positive. Average vote of commenters 6.8

Barely scored in the fives.

18 votes either 1 or 2. I wish those voters would comment. It is hard to improve w/out critisism. And even harder to accept a low score with out reason.

i think you're right on here.

Proof that technically good shots don't always win

I've been saying that for a while now.....

It's the challenge and the challenge ONLY.
I must say, I glanced (dont vote on opens anymore) at the final results and was shocked at some terrible pics that wound up above yours(and mine).
That is why I have decided not to enter or vote on the open challenges. There is just no rhyme or reason to them IMO.

I thought this was technically good too but I guess it was just plain boring. Just wish someone had pointed that out during the challenge. :)

Your shot is well composed, well lit, and fits -- I understand your decision (I hope it counts that you connected with a few member/commenters?) and look forward to seeing your shots in the member's ones.

I'll give this a go and want to state that although I see all the stuff below doesn't mean I can execute that in my shot ;)

I gave it a 3. Met the challenge topic for sure. The still life had no strong focal element - each item is given the same weight - (along with the background that is strong enough to be an element in the shot along with the sun items) my eye jumps from one to the next and isn't "guided" through the frame. Your lighten doesn't help as it is evenly spread throughout. Lastly I didn't connect with the items (e.g. candy is yummy = an emotional reaction) and it didn't hold interest for me.
