Hello All,

I am very new to photography (pretty much 1 month-ha), but have found it very intriguing. Most of what I'm doing is learning about my camera.

I feel very nervous entering a photo, yet I would like to get feedback. I've been doing great with the macro-flower stuff - but pretty basic.

Last night I tried some 'shadow' shots (although not sure if they'd be considered shadow). I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try.

I am very excited about this site and enjoy reading everyone's comments, views and knowledge.

Ruth,

Welcome aboard :) The only advice I can offer you is to POST! After you post, you will receive comments that range from 'your photo sucks' to 'i love it' and so on... Don't take anything you get in a comment personally, even though some will seem that way.

Everyone started out where you are at some point... There are some similar to you posting here as well...

Post your photo and GOOD LUCK :)

Hey Ruth,

I think that you should go ahead and submit a picture. I am not a pro at taking pics but entering in the contests really helps me out and people point out things that i wouldn't have ever thought of! So give it a shot it won't hurt!!

Thank you very much for your comments - I really appreciate it.

I will enter a photo - which one, I'm not sure yet.

THANKS and GOOD LUCK to everyone! :-)

I'm glad you will be posting a photo. Many of us are very much amatuers here and we are all learning. Good luck.

Hi Ruth, this is my first week too. I've stewed on my choice all week and then late last night I changed my mind. Earlier I submitted something safe and sharp, but boreing. The new picture is fuzzy and dark but it is a MUCH better picture than my first choice. This way I can have no expectations for the score.

Yeh, it's going to be a long week. lol. Beth

Hi Ruth,
I'm new here too and pretty nervous to see the response to my first entry. I entered one, then changed my mind and submitted a replacement, though I'm not sure which was better. That's the worst thing - I don't know how to judge my own work. I wish I could have entered them both.
Good luck,
Gina

Dear Gina (and other first-time posters),

A lot of people here post their alternates and outtakes at some other site and post links here in the forums to get additional feedback outside of the challenge itself.
For example, here''s my alternate entry for the just-finishing "On The Road" challenge.

This is my fifth shot I'm posting and I've gone back and forth between two pictures of the same thing (so I can't even post my outtake). You'll always go through that unless you just have an awesome shot you know is your best this week. I may submit and unsubmit a few more times before midnight... but I will submit something!

Welcome to this site! :)

Red and Gina (and any other new posters)
Heck, this is my 11th challenge, and I still get nervous about it! How's that for encouragement? :-) In all honesty, though, since I've started opening myself up to critique, my photography has improved dramatically. (I still have a long ways to go, no doubt about it, but at least I'm on my way.) Take the comments as they help you. There will always be some that seem personal, but they're not. And there will always be people that you learn to respect no matter how scathing their review is. I think that is what makes DPC so great. Oh yea, if no one has warned you, this site IS addictive, and you will see dramatic drops in productivity at home and at work. (But your pics get better!)

Welcome aboard to all of the new members. Don't be nervous about submitting something, as you can please some people some of the time, but none of them all of the time. You will learn real quick about any basic mistakes that you might make, but that helps you do better on the next one. I liken it to playing golf, I am here to play the course, not to compete head on with any of the photographers. I think you will find that this is a pretty nice group of folks. I must also add that Drew and Langdon do a great jog in making this resource available to us. They are responsive to the wants and needs of the majority, someitmes the minority too!

This is also my first week. Seems I am not alone! Of course, the only week there isn't a day of sun is shadows. After waiting a few days for the sun to come out, I decided to screw it and shoot something inside. I think it came out pretty well, but I will soon find out what the rest of you guys think. I am a bit nervous, as well, but after reading a few comments in the past challenges, I have an idea of who to listen to and who to ignore.

Hey Ruth,

Nothing to worry about at all. Shadows will be my second entry, and I must say, my first entry was a pretty terrible one. The shot was out of focus, had very distracting shadows, was highly pixelated, and was just generally a pretty poor shot. Even so, I got a lot of positive encouragement, several suggestions, and lots of constructive criticism. I don't think I got any highly negative comments, and I wouldnt expect you or anyone else would either. For the most part, everyone seems pretty friendly here!

RUN AWAY. RUN AWAY WHILE YOU STILL CAN. WHILE YOUR DIGINITY IS STILL INTACT!!!!

:)

I think the best advice I can think of is: Don't post to win, post to learn. There are a few A-Holes on here, but they come and go and for the most part, everyone is pretty cool. If you ever have a question feel free to post in the message boards and someone will be sure to berate you..er... I mean answer your questions. :) Try to keep your picture anonymous until after the challenge, its sort of the unwritten rule around here. You should have seen what we did to the last person who came out of anonymity. :)

Hey Ruth,

Welcome to the club! I'm new to the challange, but not to being a photographer. I bought my digital camera June 2001 and was clueless for the first five months. On the sixth month, I started to get the hang of it. And now (since approx. January 2002), I've gotten enough practice that my church created an office: church photographer! Ain't it cool?

My advice (if I may give you) is to read everything you can get your hands on on photographic technique (that even includes film photography!) Best of luck to ya!
